Experience the Future of Sports with VR Taekwondo at Josai University!

Discover the Next Generation of Sports with VR Taekwondo

Josai University is set to host an unprecedented event that merges virtual reality with the dynamic world of sports. On December 5th and 6th, the university's Tokyo Kioicho campus, located in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, will transform into a hub for experience and competition in the cutting-edge e-sport, VR Taekwondo. This innovative event is not only a thrilling showcase of skill and technology but also offers a unique educational opportunity that integrates sports with data science and mathematics.

What is VR Taekwondo?

VR Taekwondo is an immersive virtual reality sport that utilizes headsets and motion sensors to track players' movements with precision. Participants can engage in one-on-one battles, mirroring real Taekwondo techniques such as kicks, punches, and footwork through avatars in a digital environment. This futuristic approach to martial arts has gained international traction and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of its Olympic eSports Series, with hopes of becoming an official Olympic event by 2027.

An Educational Revolution

The Department of Information Mathematics at Josai University is pioneering a novel educational model that blends mathematical concepts with the practical application of sports. During the VR Taekwondo competition and experience sessions, participants will have access to vast amounts of motion data that can be analyzed for various educational purposes:
  • - Performance Analysis: Utilizing data science to assess participants' techniques.
  • - Optimal Strategy Design: Applying optimization theory and game theory to devise winning strategies.
  • - Motion Prediction: Employing artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling for predicting movements during the sport.

This event builds on the enthusiasm generated in previous workshops held earlier this summer at the Sakado campus, where students and community members alike expressed excitement about the intersection of mathematics and competitive sports. Feedback included remarks like, “It’s fascinating to feel how mathematics impacts the outcome in sports,” and “I’m genuinely eager about courses that analyze VR competition through data.”

Given the positive response to prior activities, the upcoming event aims to elevate the experience of future sports intertwined with mathematical education, right in the heart of Tokyo.
