Origin Tohoku Celebrates 60 Years by Revamping Popular Food Choices with Bulk Options

Celebrating 60 Years of Origin Tohoku: A Return to Its Roots with Expanding Bulk Options

Origin Tohoku, known for its specialty in bento boxes and side dishes through its Kitchen Origin outlets, is marking its 60th anniversary by enhancing its bulk sale offerings. This initiative aims to cater to the rising consumer demand for customized purchasing options, allowing customers to buy only what they need and want. The company has recognized that its longstanding philosophy of offering “just the right amount” is increasingly relevant in today’s economy, characterized by inflation and a growing preference for smaller portion sizes.

A Model That Emphasizes Consumer Choice

The visionary behind this concept, founder Hideo Yazawa, was inspired by his study of American retail models. He noted how customers appreciated having the freedom to choose their favorite items and purchase them in quantities that suited their needs. This notion of “measured selling,” which was introduced 32 years ago, has played a pivotal role in the company’s growth and customer satisfaction, particularly as more consumers seek ways to avoid waste and save money amidst rising prices.

Growing Demand for Selective Purchases

Recent trends have shown a significant increase in the demand for selective buying, driven by inflationary pressures and demographic shifts such as the rise of single-person households. There is a growing need for options that allow consumers to buy just a little bit more or a precise amount to prevent food wastage. For instance, within the Aeon Group, product categories that support single-item sales have seen substantial growth, mirroring this demand. In recent months, customers have expressed their approval for the convenience of being able to select just the right amount, proving that this strategy resonates well in the current market.

Expanding Bulk Sales Across 208 Locations

In response to customer feedback and demand, Origin Tohoku commenced a trial program in select locations starting from November 2025, allowing customers to choose individual pieces from its range of popular side dishes. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with sales of bulk-sale items rising by approximately 30% compared to the previous year. Customers praised the option, noting it was especially convenient when they wanted just one more item or preferred to choose quantities to fit their desires. Encouraged by this response, the company plans to extend this bulk sales initiative to 208 stores across the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kansai regions.

Key Launch Details

The full-scale rollout is expected to commence on August 10, 2026, featuring a variety of popular items that customers can choose from, with pricing set at 218 yen per 100 grams (approximately 235.44 yen including tax). Customers will be able to select from a diverse menu, showcasing six different prepared dishes, each crafted to meet varying taste preferences and dietary needs.
