CITGO Breaks Fundraising Records with $4.36 Million for the MDA in 2025
CITGO Sets a New Benchmark for Charitable Giving
In 2025, CITGO Petroleum Corporation made headlines by raising a staggering $4.36 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This remarkable achievement not only reflects the company's commitment to social responsibility but also underscores the power of community collaboration in making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular diseases.
From golf tournaments to special events, CITGO harnessed its operational footprint across various locations to drive this historic fundraising feat. Houston stood out, contributing the highest amount of $1.31 million from a corporate golf tournament and $96,628 from the Flamingo Bowl event. Close behind were its Lemont, Illinois, team, and Lake Charles, Louisiana, team, raising $1.29 million and $694,774, respectively. This collaborative effort extended to Corpus Christi, Texas, which boosted the total by $687,020. In addition, terminals in other states, including Linden, New Jersey, and East Chicago, Indiana, contributed over $280,000, culminating in 2025 as the most successful year for fundraising in the MDA partnership.
Carlos Jordá, the CEO of CITGO, remarked, "Every dollar raised brings us closer to breakthroughs that change lives. This record year reflects the strength of our community, with employees and partners working together to make a real difference for families living with neuromuscular diseases."
Since its partnership with MDA began in 1986, CITGO has raised an astonishing total of over $280 million. These funds have significantly advanced MDA's mission by supporting innovative research, expanding the MDA Care Center Network, establishing Resource Centers, and aiding in Gene Therapy initiatives. Further, these contributions have made a direct impact on the quality of life for individuals connected with the MDA community through advocacy and summer camps.
Sharon Hesterlee, interim President and CEO of MDA, stated, "The commitment from CITGO, along with the support of business partners, employees, and communities, is accelerating progress for families living with neuromuscular diseases. This record-breaking support drives research forward, expands access to care, and brings hope to families across the country."
As CITGO and MDA gear up to celebrate 40 years of partnership in 2026, they plan to engage in new fundraising efforts and community activities that continue to foster breakthroughs that change lives. The Muscular Dystrophy Association stands as the leading voluntary health organization in the U.S. for those living with muscular dystrophy and ALS, advocating for research and support for over 300 neuromuscular conditions.
CITGO Petroleum Corporation is known as a prominent leader within the refining industry and operates well-known refineries and terminals across the United States. With approximately 3,300 employees, CITGO's annual engagement in philanthropy has distinguished its brand further, ensuring that it remains a vital player in community support and health advocacy.
By investing in the community through significant fundraising endeavors, CITGO demonstrates the profound impact a corporation can have beyond its business operations. This initiative not only builds a brighter future for individuals battling neuromuscular diseases but also creates a supportive network for families within the community, demonstrating the true essence of corporate social responsibility in action.
