Toshima Ward's Commitment to Peace

In a significant initiative for global harmony, Toshima Ward will host the "Toshima Peace Exhibition and Peace Stamp Rally" from August 6 to 14, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of peace and the consequences of war. Since the declaration of its status as a non-nuclear city in 1982, Toshima has worked diligently to connect the memories of war to present generations, emphasizing the value of peace within its community.

The Peace Exhibition

During the exhibition, attendees can visit the 1st floor of the Toshima Ward Office and the Toshima Center Square, where they will find various panels and video displays addressing the themes of non-nuclear peace and the impact of war. Special programming throughout the event will highlight personal experiences of atomic bomb survivors, including a talk by Reiko Yamada, the vice-chair of the Toshima Atomic Bomb Victims Association, who will share her experiences of surviving the bombings. In addition to this, the exhibition will feature performances by local middle school students as part of their club activities focused on promoting peace.

The Peace Stamp Rally

In conjunction with the exhibition, the "Peace Stamp Rally" will take place across various locations within the ward. The theme, "Small Acts of Kindness Create City Peace," encourages participants to reflect on kindness and compassion as they navigate through the rally. Newly added locations will include the Community Cultural Creation Center, where quizzes and other engaging activities will take place, further enriching the experience.

Remarks from Organizers

A representative from the ward expressed that this year, they are collaborating with Tanita Shokudo to enhance the event's offerings. Attendees who fill out a questionnaire at the exhibition will receive discount vouchers redeemable at the Tanita Shokudo main store, available to the first respondents. As the number of individuals who have directly experienced war declines, the organizers hope that the event will serve as a powerful prompt for many to reflect on the historical context of war and the importance of peace for future generations.
