Broadway Licensing Welcomes 'Anne of Green Gables: A New Musical'
Broadway Licensing, the musical division of Broadway Licensing Global, is excited to share its latest acquisition – the new musical adaptation of
Anne of Green Gables by Matte O'Brien and Matt Vinson. Known for its diverse range of theatrical imprints, Broadway Licensing is home to Dramatists Play Service and Playscripts. This new addition marks another step forward for Broadway Licensing as they expand their portfolio, which includes the hit Broadway productions of
Oh, Mary, and the upcoming
Eureka Day and
John Proctor is the Villain.
Anne of Green Gables, originally penned by L.M. Montgomery, is a timeless story celebrated worldwide, with over 50 million copies sold in more than 50 languages. It chronicles the adventures of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and independent girl who finds herself living with siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the idyllic Green Gables farm. The musical adaptation aims to capture Anne's journey through self-discovery and belonging, resonating well with today's modern audience by blending a clever script with a contemporary score.
Ted Chapin, CEO of Broadway Licensing Global, emphasized the excitement surrounding this acquisition, stating, "Our entire team is captivated by this vibrant and new adaptation. Welcoming
Anne of Green Gables: A New Musical into our catalogue allows us, alongside lead producers Eric Cornell and Jack Sennott of Cornice Productions, to introduce this exciting new piece to audiences worldwide."
The musical has garnered enthusiastic reviews; Christopher Arnott from the Hartford Courant described it as "a sharp re-thinking of a timeless coming-of-age tale." BroadwayWorld's Ariana Straznicky-Packer further praised it, mentioning its stylistic pace and wit reminiscent of
Gilmore Girls, infused with elements from Broadway favorites like
Wicked and
The Drowsy Chaperone.
The demand for this new musical adaptation is already significant, as Eric Cornell noted, "There is genuine excitement for this fresh rendition, and we have already received numerous licensing requests. We are thrilled to strategically collaborate with Broadway Licensing to satisfy this demand as part of our broader plans for Broadway, touring, and international productions."
Anne of Green Gables: A New Musical first premiered at Goodspeed Musicals in 2022 and was previously developed by Justin Nichols and The Rev Theatre Company. A Concept Recording for the show was released on Broadway Records in 2020, allowing audiences to experience the musical ahead of its full theatrical debut.
As Chapin concluded, "Anne Shirley has always been a 'Different Kind of Girl' and ahead of her time. At BLG, 'different' is our specialty." For more updates, the musical can be followed on social media at @aoggmusical or visit its official website
