Envision and Statera Partner on 680 MW Storage to Propel UK Renewable Energy Future
Envision and Statera: A New Era for Renewable Energy in the UK
In a landmark collaboration poised to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape in the UK, Envision Energy has partnered with Statera Energy to develop a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Carrington site. With a total capacity of 680 MW and 1360 MWh, this initiative marks one of the largest battery storage projects on a single site within the UK. It aims to fortify the country’s transition towards a highly renewable, flexible, and intelligent electricity system, contributing significantly to carbon reduction and energy resilience.
Project Overview
Located in Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Greater Manchester, the Carrington Storage project is scheduled to become operational by late 2026. Once completed, it will provide power to approximately 2.2 million homes for durations of up to two hours, thus enhancing grid stability, minimizing renewable energy curtailment, and furthering the UK's net-zero consumption and energy security goals. This project has attracted prominent stakeholders such as Lloyds, Statkraft, NatWest, Santander, Siemens Bank, SEB, and Mizuho, showcasing the trust placed in large-scale battery storage as pivotal to the energy transition.
Innovative Energy Solutions
Envision Energy will deploy its AI-powered BESS designed for high integration of renewables, superior efficiency, and optimal lifecycle performance. Statera chose Envision not only for its global expertise in energy storage and system integration but also for its pioneering AI-based solutions. The state-of-the-art system continuously monitors grid conditions in real-time, actively participating in network regulation and ensuring stability amidst high renewable penetration. Its closed-loop algorithm—consisting of forecasting, allocation, trading, and self-learning capabilities—transforms revenue generation from mere experience into a scalable, measurable, and sustainable model.
The shift from traditional "tangible assets" to "AI-driven assets" signifies a generational evolution, featuring high energy density, low noise levels, increased flexibility, and higher returns. This innovation serves as a crucial foundation for a stable and cost-effective renewable energy system.
Vision for the Future
Henry Peng, Senior Vice President and Head of Latin America and Europe at Envision Energy, articulated the significance of the Carrington project: "This development represents a critical milestone in advancing the country’s clean energy ambitions. We are proud to partner with Statera and leading energy and financial entities to roll out our AI-based BESS solutions, driving Statera's goal of achieving over 5 GW of BESS capacity by 2030. Together, we are enhancing the network's flexibility and reliability while accelerating the UK's transition towards a low-carbon energy future."
Matt Arnold, Director of BESS and Flex Gen at Statera Energy, echoed this sentiment, remarking, "We are thrilled to collaborate with Envision Energy on the Carrington storage project. Their proven experience in delivering large-scale energy storage systems, combined with their integrated, AI-driven approach, greatly enhances our capability to provide flexible and reliable energy to the UK grid and supports our country's transition to a low-carbon future."
Envision Energy has been actively participating in the European energy market with initiatives spanning the UK, France, Spain, and beyond. The successful implementation of the Carrington project will further solidify Envision’s position in the European energy storage and renewable energy sector, bringing us closer to a sustainable energy future.
This ambitious project embodies the potential of innovative technology and strategic collaboration in shaping a greener, more resilient energy landscape for the UK.
