Elise Durham Appointed as New Executive Director of NABJ
Elise Durham Takes the Helm of NABJ
In a significant development for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Elise Durham has been named the organization’s next executive director. With over three decades of extensive experience in television news management, strategic communications, and government relations, Durham is poised to lead NABJ into its next transformative chapter.
Elise Durham's credentials are impressive. She has spent her career cultivating dynamic teams and managing high-stakes communications. Currently, she serves as the Assistant General Manager of Marketing, Communications, and Public Affairs for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, recognized as the world’s busiest airport. In her role, she oversees a substantial budget and a team of 30 professionals, while building relationships with corporate and community partners.
Previously, Durham acted as the communications director for Atlanta’s mayors and led strategic communications for Morehouse College, where she contributed to a capital campaign that successfully raised $120 million. Her commitment to NABJ spans over 35 years, during which she has organized major events like presidential candidate forums and has been actively involved in scholarship fundraising.
After a thorough evaluation process by NABJ’s executive board and search advisory committee, Durham emerged as a standout candidate. Her deep understanding of the organization’s mission, along with her strategic vision, aligns perfectly with NABJ’s goals as it prepares for a new phase of growth and advocacy in the journalism landscape.
Commenting on her new role, Durham expressed, "I am honored and ready to help lead NABJ into its next, most transformative chapter grounded in vision, advocacy, innovation, and love. I often say that NABJ is the longest love affair I have ever had, and I am excited about what the future will bring." Her passion for journalism and commitment to elevating Black voices in the media are crucial during this time.
The decision to appoint Durham comes as current NABJ Executive Director Drew Berry prepares for retirement. He noted the importance of a seamless transition to maintain stability with sponsors and partners while fostering synergy with the board and staff. Berry emphasized, "We are thrilled to welcome Elise. She is uniquely positioned to guide NABJ due to her understanding of our organizational history and her vision for the future."
Durham will officially begin her new position this fall, stepping into a role that is critical not just for NABJ but for the broader journalism community. Her appointment signifies a commitment to uphold the values and mission of NABJ, enhancing advocacy for diversity and inclusion within the media industry. President Ken Lemon remarked that this selection empowers the executive board to continue fulfilling their elected responsibilities, setting the stage for NABJ’s next 50 years.
With Durham's extensive background and affection for NABJ, the organization is now positioned for progressive change. The coming months are anticipated as she lays out her vision and strategies, eager to engage with members, sponsors, and the larger community to advance NABJ's core goals. This period marks a promising evolution for the association as it builds on its legacy and prepares to tackle future challenges in journalism.
