Northwestern Mutual Achieves $75 Million Milestone in Childhood Cancer Support and Research Funding

Northwestern Mutual's Commitment to Childhood Cancer Care

In an inspiring move that underscores its dedication to children and families battling cancer, Northwestern Mutual has recently committed an additional $100,000 to its childhood cancer initiatives. This latest investment elevates the total contributions from the foundation to a remarkable $75 million since its inception in 2012. The funding specifically targets programs that provide support to families affected by childhood cancer, emphasizing the importance of both treatment and emotional support during challenging times.

The Children's Wisconsin MACC Fund Center in Milwaukee, known for its comprehensive care and innovative research, will be the first recipient of this funding. Northwestern Mutual has committed to further supporting additional healthcare facilities in 2027.

Heroes in Healthcare

Accompanying the funding announcement, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation also introduced the Childhood Cancer Healthcare Hero Award. Recognizing exemplary dedication among healthcare professionals, the inaugural award was presented to Katy Tomlinson, RN, BSN. The award not only honors her selfless efforts in caring for children with cancer but also includes a significant financial grant aimed at further enhancing patient care within her facility.

"Behind every childhood cancer journey is a dedicated hospital team going above and beyond every day," remarked Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "The Healthcare Hero Award is our way of shining light on their perseverance and honoring the people who help families navigate some of life's toughest moments."

Community Collaboration for a Greater Cause

In addition to directly enhancing hospital programs, Northwestern Mutual has created engaging community initiatives to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research throughout September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. One such initiative, the Research Batted In program, with its partner, the Milwaukee Brewers, ensures that for every run batted in by the team, donations are made towards childhood cancer research, translating into thousands of hours of research funding through the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

As a result of these combined efforts, the partnership has raised over $500,000 towards critical research since its beginning, showcasing how community engagement can influence positive change.

Furthermore, Northwestern Mutual has launched a pledge where for every new financial plan created during September, it will donate $1,001 to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, aiming to fund 40,000 hours of research. The company also encourages podcast listeners to support the cause, pledging $10 for each new follower gained during the month.

Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual has made significant strides toward combating childhood cancer. More than 860,000 hours of research funding have been facilitated, along with resources aiding over 370 students pursue higher education through the Childhood Cancer Scholarship Program.
