In a significant development within the realm of autonomous technology, Plus, an international leader in AI-driven trucking software, has partnered with TIER IV, renowned for launching the first open-source software for autonomous vehicles. The collaboration aligns with the Japanese government's initiative aimed at advancing autonomous driving technologies. Given Japan's severe shortage of truck drivers—a situation exacerbated by an aging population—this partnership intends to revolutionize freight transportation across the country. According to a report from the Nomura Research Institute, it's projected that Japan could face a staggering 36% deficit in truck drivers by 2030, making this initiative particularly urgent.

Both companies plan to co-develop a specialized autonomous driving software solution tailored for the Japanese market. This initiative will merge Plus’s sophisticated end-to-end virtual driver AI model with TIER IV's platform, which is fundamentally based on the open-source software dubbed Autoware, advocated vigorously by TIER IV. By integrating these technologies, they aim to create innovative solutions that will enhance the feasibility and efficiency of freight transport within Japan.

Shinpei Kato, CEO of TIER IV, expressed confidence in the collaboration stating, “We’ve always believed that co-creation with our partners is the fastest way to bring the best autonomous driving systems to the world.” Kato highlights the significance of Plus, a company already leveraging its technology with top truck manufacturers like TRATON GROUP's Scania and MAN, and Hyundai, making them an optimal collaborator for the introduction of Autonomy 2.0 framework in Japan.

In parallel, David Liu, CEO and co-founder of Plus, emphasized the necessity of implementing driverless trucks to tackle the substantial shortage of drivers in Japan. He stated, “We are excited to leverage our AV2.0 Generative AI-based autonomous driving technology and expertise in deploying autonomous trucks with global truck makers to work with TIER IV to accelerate the rollout of driverless trucks in Japan.”
