ZTE's Push for Sustainable AI Innovation
At the recent
AI for Good Global Summit 2025 held in Geneva,
Cui Li, the Chief Development Officer at
ZTE Corporation, articulated the urgent need for efficient and green artificial intelligence (AI) systems as a linchpin for progress towards the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During her keynote address titled “
Accelerating Progress Towards Sustainable Development Goals with a New AI-Based Paradigm”, Li underscored ZTE's innovative initiatives aimed at integrating green practices within AI advancements.
The Challenge of Sustainable AI
Li noted that the current wave of AI innovation, driven primarily by
large language models, is advancing rapidly. However, this rapid escalation comes with an increasing demand for data processing capabilities and higher energy consumption. She emphasized the pressing requirement for the industry to adopt sustainable AI practices as we confront what she referred to as the “
inverted triangle dilemma”. Achieving sustainable AI is not merely a choice but an imperative that will define the industry's future.
A Dual Approach: Energy for AI and AI for Energy
In her talk, Li framed the sustainability discourse from two crucial angles:
“Energy for AI” and
“AI for Energy”. She explained that tackling the energy demands of AI technologies requires a two-fold solution:
1.
Building High-Performance Infrastructures: ZTE addresses energy consumption issues by constructing robust infrastructures that can efficiently support AI operations.
2.
Optimizing Cognitive Capabilities: By refining cognitive processes and ensuring lean operations, ZTE aspires to facilitate an eco-friendly and sustainable evolution of AI technologies.
On the flip side, in discussing
“AI for Energy”, Li shared that ZTE has deeply integrated AI functionalities with their information and communication technology (ICT) offerings. This integration aims to create comprehensive smart solutions that cater to various sectors—industrial, residential, and consumer—while promoting efficient energy usage and contributing to a lower carbon economy.
A Path Forward for All
With a focus on sustainability at the core of ZTE's philosophy, Li reiterated the company's strategy of
“AI for everyone”, which ensures that AI technologies are accessible while maximizing their societal benefits. Implementing AI into daily operations not only enhances cost-effectiveness but also aligns with global efforts to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
The intersection of technology and sustainability encapsulated in ZTE’s mission reinforces the notion that efficient AI is key to not just developing advanced technological solutions but also fostering environmental stewardship. ZTE's journey towards a green future embodies the aspiration for technological growth that’s rooted in social and environmental responsibility.
ZTE's proactive approach in this domain is setting an industry benchmark, proving that through innovative thinking and commitment to green practices, businesses can contribute positively towards achieving global sustainability objectives. For additional insights into Cui Li’s keynote, please visit
