Meat Companies and Family Farmers Unite at U.S. Capitol to Protect Agricultural Standards

Rally for Family Farms: Protecting Humane Agricultural Laws

On October 8th, a diverse group of stakeholders including hog farmers, retailers, and meat companies will come together in Washington, D.C., to voice their opposition to the controversial Save Our Bacon Act and its implications for family farms. This coalition, spearheaded by organizations like the Responsible Meat Coalition, is set to rally in front of the National Press Club to highlight the potential repercussions of these legislative changes on agricultural standards and family livelihoods across the nation.

The upcoming event is anticipated to attract over 200 farmers from 30 different states, along with notable companies like ButcherBox, a meat delivery service based in Watertown, Massachusetts. Together, they will demonstrate in support of humane farming practices as established in Massachusetts's Question 3 and California's Proposition 12. Both laws, which set stricter welfare standards for livestock, have gained substantial public support, reflecting a growing consumer demand for ethically sourced food.

At the heart of the rally is a public press conference where farmers and industry leaders aim to educate lawmakers about the risks associated with the proposed legislation. The backdrop of the event will include a poignant display: a gestation crate holding a lifelike representation of a pig to emphasize the inhumane practices that some sectors of the pork industry seek to reinstate.

The proposed legislation threatens to dismantle these much-needed regulations, potentially putting whole farms out of business. For many family farmers, laws like Question 3 provide essential protections that allow them to operate sustainably and humanely. The passage of such measures has encouraged numerous farmers to move away from outdated and cruel practices like the use of gestation crates.

In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of Proposition 12, which establishes minimum space requirements for pigs, hens, and calves, ensuring that these animals can have the space to move freely. Amid this regulatory landscape, a significant number of U.S. pork producers, approximately 27%, have initiated or are planning to expand their operations to comply with these standards and gain access to California’s lucrative market.

Leading meat companies have voiced their allegiance to these reforms as well. Notable names like Perdue Farms and its brands—Niman Ranch and Coleman All Natural Meats, along with True Story Foods—are all on board, reinforcing a collective commitment to responsible farming.

Mike Salguero, Founder and CEO of ButcherBox, expressed the significance of consumer preferences in shaping farm practices. He stated, "The farmers who invested in meeting Prop. 12 standards took a risk to do the right thing, and we're proud to partner with them. Consumer interest in animal welfare continues to accelerate with no signs of slowing down..." Salguero emphasized that efforts to undermine these standards would not only penalize proactive producers but would also disappoint consumers who seek ethical food sources.

Public opinion backs this movement strongly, with nearly 70% of Americans opposing the use of gestation crates in farming. The favorable outcomes for Massachusetts and California's initiatives, which saw 78% and 63% voter approval respectively, stand as a testament to the shift in consumer attitudes toward animal welfare standards.

In the days following the rally, trucks and tractors displaying large American flags and banners will circle the Capitol area, further amplifying the message of the coalition. For farmers across the nation, the outcome of this legislative battle could be a determining factor in their ability to continue operations that adhere to humane standards.

ButcherBox remains open for interviews with media representatives at its headquarters in Watertown, MA, while participating farmers are also available for comments and discussions.

This rally is about more than just meat; it’s a movement aimed at securing the future of family farming and ethical food production across America.
