Celebrating Green Innovation: CGN Open Day Connects Five Nations for a Sustainable Future
CGN Open Day Goes Global: Five Countries, One Green Future
On May 21, 2026, the China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) organized its remarkable CGN Open Day simultaneously across five nations: France, Namibia, Malaysia, Laos, and Brazil. This event coincided with the United Nations World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, embodying the spirit of global collaboration.
The Open Day drew participation from over 300 eager students and media representatives who visited various CGN project sites. These visits aimed to immerse them in the innovative technology and human effort behind the advancement of green energy, employing a mix of science education, cultural arts, and meaningful dialogue.
In France, a group of nearly 100 students and teachers from Collège Paul Langevin made their way to the Viapres Wind Farm located in the picturesque Grand Est Region. Here, CGN engineers took the opportunity to explain various aspects of wind energy generation, alongside the adoption of AI in equipment maintenance and biodiversity preservation. Science educator Samuel Pierson highlighted the importance of hands-on experience, stating, "AI can provide knowledge, but it cannot replace the feeling of seeing the blades rotate and touching the equipment." This experience was framed as a critical learning moment for the younger generation, blending real-world experience with theoretical knowledge.
Meanwhile, in Namibia, a group of journalists from 11 major local media outlets toured the Husab Uranium Mine, which stands as China's largest industrial investment in Africa and ranks as the third-largest uranium mine globally. Representatives from CGN's Swakop Uranium engaged in discussions about community investment initiatives, ecological restoration efforts, and the vital importance of water security, effectively demonstrating what responsible mining practices look like in reality.
Shifting focus to Malaysia, students from the Merlimau Polytechnic had a chance to visit the EMPP, Southeast Asia's largest gas-fired power project constructed by CGN. This project alone satisfies approximately 10% of Peninsular Malaysia's energy needs. During this visit, students explored the central control room and gas turbine training facility. Plant Director Mr. Shiva shared invaluable career advice, emphasizing that while universities provide theoretical knowledge, real-life experiences at power plants impart a sense of responsibility. The cultural experience was further enriched with a Chinese water-marbling fan workshop.
In Laos, nearly 20 students from Muang Xay Secondary School visited CGN’s newly inaugurated 1 GW Phase I Interconnection Solar Project—the largest single-site photovoltaic project in Southeast Asia. They had an opportunity to engage in artistic expression by painting eco-friendly bags, each drawing their vision of a sustainable future. The excitement continued as they toured the booster station and learned about the conversion of sunlight into electricity.
Lastly, in Brazil's Piauí State, around 50 children explored the LDB Wind Farm, CGN's pioneering independently built and operated greenfield wind project. After witnessing the expansive turbine arrays, the young learners enjoyed an educational puppet show demonstrating how vegetation plays a crucial role in preserving water resources and regulating temperature.
CGN Open Day served as an exciting platform for cultural exchange and education. With a steadfast commitment to green development, CGN has established itself by exceeding 13 GW of installed capacity in renewable energy, delivering more than 370 billion kWh of clean electricity to areas across 18 nations. Through these ongoing efforts, CGN continues to share its core values of "Clean, Green, Nature", fostering not just energy independence but also a global consciousness towards sustainable living.
