OpenEDG Announces Launch of Python Certification in Japan
On February 13, 2026, the Open Education and Development Group (OpenEDG) revealed that its subsidiary, the Python Institute, will begin offering globally recognized Python certification tests in Japan. This initiative promises to bolster the professional qualifications of Japanese developers in the realm of programming.
Headquartered in Poland, OpenEDG has been a key player in programming language certification since its establishment in 2011, originating from the C++ Institute. The organization has successfully rolled out a range of certification exams and educational materials, significantly increasing the number of certified professionals globally in various programming languages including Python and JavaScript.
The Python Institute is an independent nonprofit project managed by OpenEDG, with a focus on spreading the use of the Python programming language, fostering the next generation of Python developers, and supporting professional careers in the field. By developing curricula, conducting skill assessments, and providing high-quality exams, the institute has established a globally recognized framework for Python education and certification.
Starting now, four types of Python certification exams will be available in Japanese, facilitating access for local candidates. Additional certifications will be localized and introduced gradually.
Overview of Certification Exams
The certifications by OpenEDG Python Institute are vendor-neutral international qualifications recognized worldwide. They are offered in collaboration with schools, educational boards, vocational colleges, universities, training companies, and industry-leading IT firms. The exams are conducted through various channels, including OpenEDG's Test Services (TestNow™), OnVUE online supervised testing, and a network of over 5,000 Pearson VUE certified exam centers. Initially, test-takers in Japan will be able to sit for exams through TestNow.
OpenEDG defines an independent global certification pathway in the Python domain, consisting of seven specializations (tracks):
- - General Programming (PCEP™, PCAP™, PCPP1™, PCPP2™)
- - Data Science (PCED™, PCAD™)
- - Testing (PCET™, PCAT™, PCPT™)
- - Security (PCES™, PCAS™)
- - Automation (PCEA™, PCAA™)
