Huawei's Grid-Interactive AIDC Strategy



On May 15, 2026, the Global AIDC Industry Summit, alongside Huawei’s major strategy and product launch, took place in Dongguan, China. Themed "Power the AI Era Forward," the summit attracted nearly 1,000 leaders, technical experts, and partners from the energy, intelligent computing, and telecommunications sectors. It served as a crucial platform for sharing perspectives on advancements in AI data center (AIDC) architecture and unveiling Huawei's innovative grid-interactive AIDC strategy.

During the event, Hou Jinlong, Director of Huawei and President of Huawei Digital Power, emphasized the growing energy demands driven by the burgeoning AI sector. AI applications increasingly require massive computing power, which in turn necessitates a stable and efficient energy supply. As Hou stated, the collaboration between energy supply and computing resources is fundamental for the long-term success of AI developments. He also noted that a robust, reliable power infrastructure is essential for the effective operation of AIDCs.

One focal point of discussion was the integration of high-voltage, direct current power systems into AIDCs, which are essential for managing ultra-high-density computing loads. Coupled with cutting-edge liquid cooling solutions, these technologies are vital for the operational efficiency and sustainability of AI infrastructures. Huawei aims to position itself as a leader in this domain by merging power and computing technologies (termed the 4T technologies – bit, watt, heat, and battery) to offer comprehensive solutions in renewable power generation and high-density computing.

Bob He, Huawei’s Vice President, further elaborated on the implications of these advancements during his keynote titled "Building Grid-Interactive AIDC, Maximizing Tokens Per Watt." He highlighted the need for adaptability in AIDC systems to accommodate fluctuating loads and the increased penetration of renewable energy in power grids. This led to the introduction of Huawei's grid-interactive strategy, which is built on three core innovations, denoted as "3+1" innovations. This strategy envisions creating a power-efficient, reliable, and rapid delivery system that can optimize the conversion of energy into computing capacity.

The innovations within this framework focus on:
1. Watt Innovation: Redefining power supply architectures by integrating AC and DC systems, which will coexist to meet diverse power requirements and enhance the system's grid-friendliness. The architecture emphasizes a multi-input, multi-output power supply centered around energy storage and UPS technologies.
2. Heat Innovation: Transforming thermal management with AI-driven liquid cooling solutions to ensure optimal heat dissipation throughout the system's lifecycle, a necessity for long-term reliability in AI operations.
3. Bit Innovation: Enhancing data center operations with AI technologies that foster end-to-end visibility and reliability across the lifecycle, thus enabling efficient operation management.
4. Construction Innovation: Streamlining construction processes through productization, prefabrication, and modular strategies, significantly reducing time to market and enhancing overall quality control.

Bob He concluded by emphasizing that the measurement of AI computing power is directly linked to energy supply. The concept of 'Energy as Token' encapsulates the shift from traditional energy efficiency metrics to value-centric measurements, prompting the introduction of the TokEnergy Index to better evaluate the efficiency of energy usage in AIDCs.

The evolution of data centers is evident as they transition into essential engines driving AI developments, producing beneficial outcomes—tokens—through efficient power management. As the AIDC landscape continues to evolve, Huawei's strategic investments in technology position it as a potential frontrunner, ensuring that it maximizes the efficiency of energy usage in the exciting AI era ahead.
