On August 28, 2026, the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) unveiled a remarkable array of 31 innovative technologies at the '2026 Meet Greater South' event. This year's theme, 'Meet Your BEST Solution: Connecting Local Businesses with Tech Solutions', highlighted the collaboration between startups, research institutes, and industry leaders, including prominent organizations such as the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC), the Institute for Information Industry (III), and the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI).

Emphasis on Two Key Areas


The exhibition strategically focused on two primary themes. Firstly, 'AI Across Industries' aimed to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence beyond high-tech manufacturing into diverse sectors like construction, architecture, water quality monitoring, and food production. Secondly, the 'Industrial Upgrading' theme underscored the importance of advancing the manufacturing landscape in central and southern Taiwan through innovative technologies that enhance both productivity and product quality.

The culmination of these innovations already showcases tangible success stories. Leading companies, including Ability Opto-Electronics Technology, Li Xiang Machinery, HIWIN Technologies, and TBI Motion Technology, have successfully secured orders from major international clients, demonstrating the real-world impact of technology R&D aligned with industry requirements.

Highlighting AI in Industry


A prime exhibit aligning with the government's 'AI Across Industries' policy was the display of AI-optimized metalens imaging technology. This breakthrough enables the production of thinner laptop lenses without sacrificing image quality. The ITRI's Ultra-thin Structure NanoOptics Chip Technology exemplifies this innovation, overcoming the traditional bulk associated with multi-element lenses. By leveraging semiconductor manufacturing techniques enhanced by AI, this technology reduces lens thickness from 2.3-3mm to a mere 1.3mm. This advancement has already been implemented by Ability Opto-Electronics Technology in their ultra-thin laptops, enabling facial recognition logins in a compact design.

AI Applications in Water Quality Monitoring


Furthermore, AI's reach has extended to water quality management, where clams are utilized as biological indicators for monitoring essential water systems serving over two million inhabitants. The III's Digital Twin Technology for Bio-Water Quality Sensing presents a cost-effective solution as opposed to deploying numerous traditional water quality sensors. By monitoring clam shell movements through non-invasive camera systems, AI interprets these behaviors to provide real-time insights into water quality variances. Implemented at the Bansin Water Treatment Plant, Sanxia River Pumping Station, and Shoufeng Water Treatment Plant, this technology plays an essential role in maintaining water quality standards for critical industries, including semiconductors and precision machining.

Through this event, DoIT strives to encourage the swift adoption of groundbreaking technologies and propel industrial advancement in central and southern Taiwan. These exhibits not only showcase Taiwan’s commitment to innovation but also provide a collaborative platform for local businesses to interact with cutting-edge technologies that promise to transform various sectors. As the local and international landscapes evolve, these innovations stand as catalysts for fostering sustainable growth and operational excellence in diverse industries across Taiwan.
