Successful Completion of Uzbekistan's First Digital Substation Enhancing Energy Infrastructure

Success of the Zafarabad Digital Substation

In a significant milestone for Uzbekistan's energy sector, Shanghai Electric has successfully completed the construction of the country's very first digital substation, the Zafarabad 220kV substation. Located in the Jizzakh region, this cutting-edge facility spans approximately 75,000 square meters and is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing energy supply in eastern Uzbekistan.

For over two decades, Uzbekistan has grappled with persistent shortages of natural gas and electricity. This situation has forced many residents to rely on traditional stoves and makeshift heating methods to endure the harsh winter months. The completion of the Zafarabad digital substation is expected to provide a significant improvement in the regional power grid and energy distribution across the country.

With a capacity of 400 megawatts, this new station will effectively double the energy supply to the Jizzakh region, ensuring stable electricity delivery to local residential areas and industrial operations.

Advanced Technology for Optimal Efficiency

The Zafarabad substation is equipped with two 250 MVA autotransformers, designed and manufactured by Shanghai Electric, which will lower the voltage from the high-level 220 kV power network to 110 kV for local distribution. This innovative solution will ensure reliable, high-quality electricity supply to the province, catering to the continuously increasing demand in this rapidly developing region.

What sets this investment apart is the implementation of a fully digital operating system that will significantly enhance both the efficiency and safety of the substation's operations. The facility is outfitted with advanced monitoring and data acquisition systems which reduce the need for onsite maintenance personnel while improving operational safety. In the event of a failure, the real-time monitoring system enables immediate identification of faults and adjustments of power output, thus preventing service interruptions.

Shanghai Electric's Expertise

Shanghai Electric undertook this turnkey project with the Uzbek National Electric Grid starting in October 2021. As the first digital substation of its kind in Uzbekistan, it encountered numerous challenges including collaboration between multiple stakeholders, language barriers, and technical troubleshooting. The team not only optimized various aspects of the project but also conducted comprehensive training.

Throughout the construction phase, the coordination between Chinese and Uzbek teams allowed for timely completion of the main infrastructure while achieving an impressive record of three years without any accidents.
