This survey gathered insights from 307 parents whose children acquired their first vehicle within three years, shedding light on familial spending behaviors, safety concerns, and car selection priorities.

Study Highlights

Financial Support

Approximately 79.8% of parents provide some form of financial assistance for their children's car purchases. This support is even more pronounced among cohabitating families, where about 86.0% of parents contribute financially. Among the surveyed parents, only 19.2% admitted to not providing any assistance.

The types of financial support varied: 30.6% of parents fully covered the costs, while 40.7% offered partial funding. The amounts parents typically contributed fell into a significant range, with 24.5% of parents reporting spending between 500,000 and 1,000,000 yen. The leading reason given for this assistance is that many children lacked sufficient savings or income, with 49.0% of parents citing this as their primary motive for financial support.

Parent-Child Living Arrangements

Surprisingly, nearly 74.6% of parents reported living with their children, which corresponded to higher levels of financial assistance. The study showed a strong correlation between living arrangements and the extent of monetary support, with cohabiting parents more likely to provide full or partial funding for car expenses.

Selecting the Right Vehicle

When it comes to vehicle selection, parents also play an essential role in guiding the decision-making process. Over 41.0% indicated they led the selection of the make and model of the car. The survey identified that the most critical factor in car selection was safety performance, chosen by 39.4% of parents, surpassing traditional concerns like cost and fuel efficiency.

Safety Concerns

This emphasis on safety resonates with parents' anxiety about their children operating vehicles. The survey indicated that 61.2% of parents expressed worries about their children potentially causing accidents, while 30.3% held concerns regarding their driving skills. This contrast highlights the protective instinct parents feel as their children transition into adulthood.
