CPSC's Urgent Call to Families for Window Safety: Protect Children from Falls

Keeping Kids Safe During National Window Safety Week

As temperatures rise and windows open, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents and caregivers to prioritize window safety for children. With National Window Safety Week upon us, families are reminded of the critical steps they can take to protect their little ones from the risks associated with open windows.

Each year, thousands of children are injured when falling from windows. According to data, around 5,600 children aged 12 and under visited emergency departments in 2024 due to window falls; tragically, some of these incidents can even be fatal. Reports indicate that from 2021 to 2023, at least 25 child fatalities resulted from such accidents, with the majority occurring during the warmer months between May and October.

CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman highlights, "These heartbreaking incidents can happen quickly and quietly and often when least expected." To help prevent these types of falls, he advocates for simple safety measures that can be easily implemented in any home. Here are some of the essential safety tips recommended by the CPSC:

1. Install Window Guards: These can act as a barrier, preventing children from accidentally falling from windows. Ensure that guards can be easily opened by adults in case of emergencies, such as fires, especially for windows on the sixth floor or lower.

2. Use Window Stops: These devices limit how far windows can be opened, ideally to no more than four inches, preventing children from climbing out.

3. Avoid Relying on Screens: Many families believe that screens are sufficient to keep children safe, but they are not designed to prevent falls and should not be relied upon.

4. Open Windows from the Top: Whenever possible, it's safer to open windows from the top rather than the bottom, minimizing the chances of children climbing out.

5. Keep Furniture Away from Windows: This simple step discourages climbing, as children are naturally curious and may use furniture as a stepping stone to reach the window.

It's also crucial for renters to discuss the installation of window guards with their landlords, ensuring a safe environment. CPSC's emphasis on these preventative measures underlines the importance of vigilance in safeguarding children, especially as summer approaches and outdoor activities increase.

CPSC's commitment to reducing consumer product-related injuries has contributed significantly to public safety over the last fifty years. The agency reminds families that by taking standard precautions such as these, they can avert tragic accidents and ensure a safer living space for their children.
