Japan's Mobile Library Initiative Brings Learning Opportunities to South Africa

Empowering South African Children through Mobile Libraries

In a remarkable initiative, the non-profit organization SAPESI-Japan is partnering with the South African government to transform Japan's retired mobile library vehicles into educational resources for South African schoolchildren. Through this project, underprivileged youth in South Africa are provided access to books that ignite their curiosity and encourage lifelong learning.

The Mobile Library Project

SAPESI-Japan has developed a dedicated project to distribute used mobile library buses from Japan to remote and underserved areas in South Africa. These buses, having reached the end of their service in Japan, are refurbished and repurposed to serve communities in need. To date, 54 vehicles have been sent to South Africa, providing countless children with crucial opportunities for reading and education.

This initiative not only facilitates literacy but also fosters a love for reading among young learners, significantly contributing to their intellectual growth.

Upcoming National Library Conference

SAPESI-Japan will present this significant initiative at the upcoming 111th National Library Conference in Ehime, Japan, taking place on October 30-31, 2025. The conference theme, “The Future Colored by Libraries from Iyo,” aims to highlight the transformative power of libraries in the modern world.

The event will be held at the Ehime Prefectural Culture Hall, with additional sessions at various community centers across Matsuyama. It's a vital opportunity for SAPESI-Japan to showcase their ongoing projects and gather support for future endeavors.

Conference Details:

  • - Name: 111th National Library Conference (Ehime)
  • - Date: October 30-31, 2025
  • - Location: Matsuyama City Community Center and other venues
  • - Organizer: A collaboration of multiple organizations, including the Japan Library Association and the Ehime Prefectural Board of Education.

Call for Mobile Library Buses

SAPESI-Japan is extending a call for additional mobile library vehicles to join this impactful initiative. They are currently looking for Japanese municipalities and libraries willing to donate their retired buses, which will undergo refurbishment before being dispatched to South Africa's public elementary schools. After necessary procedures in South Africa, these vehicles will serve as traveling libraries to educate children.

However, not all donated vehicles will be accepted; the condition of each bus will be assessed rigorously before confirmation. For more information, interested parties are encouraged to visit SAPESI-Japan’s booth during the conference or explore their website.
