Honmyokan Inn: A Glimpse Into Its Future
On July 11, 2026, the
Honmyokan Inn, located in the heart of Hongo, Tokyo, will host an insightful talk event titled
'The Future of Honmyokan'. This engaging session will be co-hosted by
narrative, a company based in Nara, renowned for its work in rural revitalization through traditional architecture, and the
Hongo Architectural Design Institute, representing the area's rich architectural heritage.
Honmyokan, which has evolved from a guesthouse established in 1898 to an inn, is a registered tangible cultural property that consists of three unique buildings—the main Honkan, the Taimachi Annex, and the Morikawa Annex. Surviving through both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo air raids during World War II, these structures are not just places of stay but living testimonies to the history of Hongo. The upcoming event aims to delve into the inn's upcoming renovation plans, ensuring its preservation and adaptation as a community space.
Renowned speakers for the event include
Naoshi Hosomi, representing the Hongo Architectural Design Institute, and
Yasuyuki Okubo, the CEO of narrative. They will discuss how Honmyokan plans to maintain its cultural value while simultaneously opening its doors to the community and adapting to modern needs.
In addition to the talk, this event will also feature the awarding ceremony for the
Honmyokan Photo Contest, launched earlier this spring. This contest encouraged submissions of photographs capturing cherished memories at the inn, and the winners will be announced at the event. A photography exhibition showcasing all the submitted works will accompany the ceremony, allowing attendees to appreciate the various perspectives of Honmyokan from its guests over the years.
This initiative marks an important step toward creating a dialogue around the proper balance between heritage preservation and contemporary functionality. It poses critical questions about how historical sites can thrive in the modern age while continuing to enrich the social fabric of their communities.
While the event is currently exclusive to invitees, there is an open invitation for media representatives seeking coverage and additional insights. For those interested in attending, please register via the contact form linked below.
