Illinois Initiative to Address Men's Mental Health Through Statewide Campaign and New Partnerships

Tackling Men's Mental Health in Illinois: An Urgent Call to Action

In June, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Illinois chapter is spearheading a crucial statewide campaign aimed at tackling the alarming rates of male suicide across the nation. Statistically, while men represent about 50% of the U.S. population, they account for a staggering 80% of all suicides. This stark reality necessitates immediate action, especially during Men's Mental Health Awareness Month.

Campaign Launch and Upcoming Events

As part of its efforts, AFSP Illinois is organizing high-impact physical events, digital education programs, and unique corporate partnerships, all designed to address male mental health issues directly where they live and work. According to Philip Martinez, board chair of AFSP Illinois, “We have to go where men are and break down the barriers that prevent them from speaking up.” The campaign includes community walks, public educational workshops, and collaborations that emphasize the urgency of mental health awareness.

Dual-Site Construction Hike for Hope

The initiative kicks off on June 13 with “The Illinois Construction Hike for Hope.” This dual-site event will occur in Downers Grove at the Hidden Lake Forest Preserve and in Grafton at the Pere Marquette State Park. The construction industry is known for facing one of the highest suicide rates across all professions, with studies showing an estimate of 12 workers dying by suicide every day. Angela Cummings, the executive director of AFSP Illinois, emphasizes that “Many construction workers are struggling with mental health in silence,” underscoring the importance of this event to raise awareness and challenge stigmas.

The Overnight Walk in Chicago

Additionally, on the night of June 13, Chicago will host AFSP's national flagship fundraising event, The Overnight, for the first time since 2009. Thousands of participants will walk 16 miles from dusk to dawn, traversing a scenic route along Lake Michigan, all while raising awareness and funding for life-saving research. This collective effort symbolizes a community united in healing and prevention.

Monthly Calendar of Events

To keep the momentum going, AFSP Illinois will host various virtual and in-person initiatives throughout June. Highlights include:
  • - Virtual Talk Saves Lives on June 25 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., focusing on male-specific risk factors and actionable steps to assist those in crisis.
  • - An In-Person Volunteer Gathering in Springfield on June 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., welcoming individuals affected by suicide to learn about volunteer opportunities.
  • - A special Virtual Pride Pathways session on June 30, aimed at supporting the LGBTQ+ community and discussing how suicide impacts this demographic.

Chicagoland Mobile Awareness Partnership

Further amplifying their message, AFSP Illinois has partnered with the Fireplace and Chimney Authority to incorporate a newly wrapped service van into its fleet, effectively serving as a mobile billboard for mental health resources. This vehicle will roam the Chicagoland area for nearly a decade, increasing visibility for AFSP initiatives and emphasizing the importance of mental health resources. A media event showcasing the design will be held later this month.

Commitment to Saving Lives

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and fostering a culture that prioritizes mental health awareness. Through educational programs, advocacy for suicide prevention, and support for affected individuals, AFSP Illinois aims to significantly reduce the national suicide rate.
