Perrigo Teamsters in New York Stand Firm During Ongoing Strike for Workers' Rights

In the Bronx, New York, members of Teamsters Local 210 have begun a strike at Perrigo Company's manufacturing facilities. This action comes in response to the company's recent attempt to eliminate essential worker benefits, including crucial overtime protections and retirement plan contributions.

Bobby Bellach, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 210, expressed the resolve of the striking workers, stating, "The company is trying to force us to give into their demands, but our members will never accept a bad deal." Bellach emphasized the significant contribution that Teamsters members make, noting that they help Perrigo generate over $100 million annually, and deserve their fair share in return.

The strike highlights the serious position that many working-class New Yorkers find themselves in, particularly in light of rising living costs in the city. Lydia Torres, Vice President of Local 210, pointed out that the proposed changes by Perrigo would make it even more difficult for workers to maintain their livelihoods. "At a time when working-class New Yorkers are struggling to afford this city, Perrigo wants to make it even harder by gutting hard-won overtime protections and retirement security," she stated.

The workforce, comprised of 190 Teamsters who hold various roles including compounders, inventory clerks, line operators, mechanics, and technicians, supports the largest manufacturer of private-label, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and consumer health products. Many workers within this group have dedicated years to the company and are seeking to protect not just their current employment terms, but also their futures and those of their families.

Long-time employee Wilfredo Guzman, who serves as chief steward and has been with Perrigo for 23 years, underscored the personal stakes involved. "Many of us have worked for years at this company and have deep ties to our neighborhood. After decades on the job, we deserve a dignified retirement," Guzman remarked. He called upon Perrigo to return to negotiations in good faith and ensure fair treatment for all employees.

The previous contract between Local 210 and Perrigo came to an end on August 31, and bargaining is set to resume on September 10. Until then, Teamsters are committed to staying on the picket line daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., amplifying their calls for justice in the workplace.
