Samsung’s New Bixby: The Conversational Assistant You’ve Been Waiting For
Samsung Electronics has officially announced the beta program for the upgraded version of Bixby, its conversational device agent, embedded within One UI 8.5. Designed to enhance interaction and intuitiveness, this update allows users to inquire about necessary information using natural language, making the experience with Samsung Galaxy devices more seamless and streamlined. The upgrade also broadens access to real-time answers from the open web.
Won-Joon Choi, COO of Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) division, emphasized the company's commitment to improving accessibility of AI technology. “Since the launch of our first AI phone in 2024, we have been dedicated to enhancing user-friendliness. This has led us to integrate the device agent directly into the Galaxy experience,” he stated. This redesign facilitates more natural conversations and intuitive device operation, helping to minimize the barriers associated with daily tasks.
Natural Conversational Interfaces for Easy Device Management
With Bixby, users are no longer required to input precise command names or settings. The AI understands natural speech, allowing for a more organic interaction with Samsung Galaxy devices. Users can elaborate on their desired actions in their own words and even seek explanations about their device’s functions. Bixby interprets user intent, performing appropriate actions to significantly reduce the time and effort involved in managing everyday device settings.
For instance, when a user says, “I don’t want my screen to timeout while I’m watching,” Bixby comprehends the request immediately and turns on the ‘always on’ screen feature without requiring the user to navigate through a list of settings or remember precise function names.
Furthermore, Bixby not only provides general guidance but also identifies the current device settings and suggests various solutions. This means users can accomplish tasks more quickly, even if they are not familiar with the device's capabilities.
For example, if a user asks, “Why is my screen always on when I put it in my pocket?” Bixby will contextualize the inquiry and provide insights into related settings that can prevent undesired screen activation.
Real-Time Web Searching Feature
Bixby's capabilities also extend to real-time web searches. Users can now access the latest information through Perplexity, with search results displayed directly within Bixby’s user interface. This integrated design allows users to seek topics or answers without being redirected to a separate browser or application, thereby maintaining focus on their current tasks.
For example, if a user requests, “Find hotels in Seoul with kids' pools,” Bixby understands the request and displays relevant web search results directly in its interface, allowing users to explore available options without any interruptions or delays.
Availability and Further Developments
The latest Bixby update as part of One UI 8.5 is currently available in select countries, including Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the UK, and the US, with plans for expansion to additional regions in the future. For more details on Bixby and its features, users can visit Samsung.com.
