University of Maryland's Initiative to Empower Small Businesses with AI Solutions



The Center for Artificial Intelligence in Business, part of the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, has recently secured an impressive $1.031 million federal grant. This funding, highlighted by U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey during an event on March 24, 2026, will focus on helping small businesses harness artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their operational efficiency.

The primary aim of this initiative is to provide tailored support for small business owners who often struggle to understand where and how to begin with AI technology. Professor Balaji Padmanabhan, the director of the Center and associate dean of strategic initiatives, emphasized the necessity of this initiative, stating, "To survive and thrive, they need to be innovative and resilient. AI can significantly aid in achieving these qualities."

According to statistics, small businesses contribute over 40% to the GDP of the U.S. economy, making the integration of AI technologies critical for their growth and sustainability. The Smith School, alongside the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC), plans to utilize these federal funds to evaluate current AI solutions, create new programs, and offer online courses and workshops tailored for small businesses across Maryland.

The collaboration between the Smith School and small businesses began two years ago when they initiated workshops in partnership with the Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation. Their efforts have already proven successful, helping over 50 local businesses become more familiar with AI applications. With the new funding, there are plans to broaden these workshops and courses to a larger audience statewide.

Lora Brown, the executive director of the Maryland SBDC, expressed excitement about the initiative, outlining that they will help small businesses identify specific challenges and choose the most suitable AI tools without facing excessive risks. The involvement of Smith students in various phases of the initiative promises a dynamic learning experience while supporting local enterprises.

Moreover, the initiative includes innovative case competitions in which students will propose AI-driven solutions for real-world problems faced by small businesses. This collaboration will not only provide practical learning for students but also offer valuable insights and solutions for local enterprises.

The funding will also be utilized to develop a comprehensive online portal, serving as a hub for small business owners to discover AI solutions suited to their operations. The platform will cover various practical applications such as AI-powered chat and email management, document processing systems, and tools for market monitoring and competitor analysis.

UMD President Darryll Pines highlighted the significance of embracing transformative technologies for maintaining the economic competitiveness of Maryland in the 21st century. Padmanabhan believes that the potential for productivity growth through AI within small businesses is tremendous, stating, "We need to ease the access to AI for small businesses and integrate it into their daily operations."
