New Initiative Launched to Enhance Care for Acute Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

On January 28, 2025, the Women's Health Research Collaborative (WHrC) and Avana Health unveiled a collaborative initiative aimed at improving the management of Acute Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB). This condition, characterized by heavy uterine bleeding not related to pregnancy, often requires urgent medical attention, yet currently lacks appropriate diagnostic and treatment coding. Notably, there are no FDA-approved therapies available for this significant healthcare challenge.

Addressing an Overlooked Issue

Despite affecting millions of women and placing considerable fiscal burdens on healthcare systems, Acute HMB has garnered little attention over the years. Dr. Malcolm Munro, a clinical professor at UCLA and co-founder of WHrC, emphasized the need for greater awareness among policymakers, healthcare providers, and educational institutions. He stated, "The WHrC aims to elevate the visibility of Acute HMB to stimulate the creation of diagnostic codes, track affected women, and push for regulatory approvals for effective interventions."

Defining Acute Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

According to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), Acute HMB is defined as substantial uterine bleeding in women of reproductive age that warrants immediate attention. This definition sets the stage for a focused approach towards addressing the gaps in care and intervention surrounding this disorder.
