Muertos Fest Celebrates A Decade-Long Celebration at Hemisfair with UNAM Partnership

Muertos Fest Secures Long-Term Home at Hemisfair

The renowned Muertos Fest, celebrated as one of the largest Day of the Dead festivals in the United States, has officially announced its festival dates for 2025: Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26. This vibrant celebration will take place at Hemisfair in downtown San Antonio, cementing its location through a new 10-year agreement that guarantees a culturally rich environment for future festivals.

"Muertos Fest has found a home at Hemisfair, where the heart of San Antonio comes alive with art, music, altars, and community spirit," expressed Jim Mendiola, the Artistic Director of Muertos Fest. This commitment to remain at Hemisfair until at least 2034 allows the festival to continue honoring its traditions while also embracing the evolving nature of this joyous event.

Now in its 13th year, Muertos Fest has established itself as a must-visit cultural gathering, drawing attendees from all over the country. The festival is free to the public and features an array of activities that include large-scale altars, also known as ofrendas, live performances, and art exhibitions, all intertwined with the rich traditions of honoring loved ones who have passed away.

In a notable expansion of its programming, Muertos Fest is collaborating with Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico - San Antonio (UNAM) to present a special altar project and a pop-up bookstore. This partnership aims to reinforce cross-cultural connections between Mexico and San Antonio while enhancing the educational and artistic components of the festival. Paula de Gortari, Director of UNAM San Antonio, stated, "We are honored to expand our collaboration with Muertos Fest this year. Our goal is to deepen the cultural ties between Mexico and San Antonio through architecture, literature, and cross-border dialogue. The Day of the Dead is more than a tradition; it's a living expression of identity, memory, and creativity."

Muertos Fest has also been recognized nationally and internationally, having been classified as one of the top 10 Day of the Dead celebrations worldwide by USA Today. Additionally, it secured a spot among the 7 Best Fall Festivals in the United States according to National Geographic. The festival is not just a celebration; it embodies the essence of San Antonio's diverse heritage and community spirit.

Organizers encourage attendees to stay updated about festival programming through the official Muertos Fest website at MuertosFest.com. For real-time updates, you can also follow the festival on social media or download the MuertosFest app. This year promises to be a groundbreaking festival that will not only celebrate rich traditions but also strengthen the cultural tapestry of San Antonio.

Join us at Hemisfair this October for a vibrant celebration of life, death, and the colorful legacies left by our ancestors.
