Japan's M&A Center Launches ASEAN Business Insight Program in 2026

ASEAN Local Inspection Program: A New Opportunity for SMEs

In a landmark initiative, the Japan M&A Center is set to launch its inaugural "ASEAN Local Inspection Program" in November 2026, in collaboration with the Kansai Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry. This program aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Japan that are keen to strengthen their overseas business strategies. Scheduled to take place in Malaysia and Vietnam from November 17 to 20, the program targets business leaders and executives eager to delve into international markets.

Background of the Program

With Japan facing a decline in population and a maturing domestic market, there is an increasing need for SMEs to look abroad for growth opportunities. However, venturing into international markets presents various challenges, such as developing sales networks, securing talent, and building local connections. In this context, foreign capital partnerships, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A) with overseas companies, have emerged as a viable strategy for accessing new markets and resources.

The Japan M&A Center has been actively connecting Japanese SMEs with ASEAN firms through cross-border M&A. In FY 2025, the Kansai Bureau hosted a research meeting titled "Facilitating Foreign Capital Partnerships between Kansai SMEs and ASEAN Companies," which the Japan M&A Center participated in as a key member, sharing insights and best practices regarding cross-border M&A.

Recognizing the need for practical engagement in foreign capital partnerships, the upcoming program aims to provide direct insights and experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to visit ASEAN-based companies and observe firsthand the strategies employed in foreign capital collaborations, enabling them to bring back invaluable knowledge and expertise to their own enterprises.
