Vantage Foundation Partners with Grab Indonesia to Empower Women Drivers
Vantage Foundation Partners with Grab Indonesia
On December 19, 2024, Vantage Foundation proudly announced a partnership with Grab Indonesia to support the Wiramudi Grab program aimed at empowering women's economic status across Indonesia. The program provides women with the opportunity to work as drivers, allowing them to earn income through flexible engagements with the Grab platform.
Launched in April 2024, the Wiramudi Grab program addresses specific challenges faced by women in the local job market, particularly the need to balance family responsibilities with professional commitments. The flagship campaign, “Melaju dengan Syantiek,” promotes the motto “Progress without Compromise,” highlighting that women should not have to choose between career, family, or education.
By collaborating with Grab to become drivers, Indonesian women can set their own working hours, gaining not just competitive earnings but also access to a variety of benefits. The partnership between Grab and Vantage Foundation has enabled the latter to provide necessary support for women overcoming barriers to entry on the Grab platform, such as lack of capital and required equipment.
Research conducted by Grab’s Indonesian division through focus groups revealed that for nearly half of the female respondents, the primary obstacles preventing them from working on the Grab platform were a lack of access to capital and equipment. This partnership has removed these challenges, allowing these women to achieve financial independence and support their families. Since the inception of this partnership in November 2024, over 1,000 women have joined the platform, and hundreds of women who previously worked as drivers have regained the opportunity to earn income through transportation and delivery services.
Steven Xie, the Executive Director of Vantage Foundation, stated, “Through this partnership, we are not only providing women with the necessary tools to thrive but also creating a domino effect of positive change. We are proud to co-create campaigns that promote progress and empower women in the uncompromising pursuit of their ambitions.”
The real impact of the Wiramudi Grab program on the lives of participating drivers is evident through personal testimonies. A single mother from Bali mentioned that the opportunity to rent an electric motorcycle from Grab daily allowed her to focus on earning without worrying about vehicle maintenance costs. Similarly, a driver from Makassar expressed that her work with Grab became a source of family income after her husband suffered a stroke. These stories indicate that the program significantly strengthens the economic status of Indonesian women and improves the quality of life within their communities.
Grab’s support for its partnered drivers extends beyond financial assistance. Women drivers can benefit from comprehensive safety solutions, including an in-app option to select female passengers as preferred riders. Furthermore, Grab provides numerous training and educational programs, along with operational standard procedures and discounts on vehicle maintenance.
Rivana Mezeya, Director of Digital and Sustainability at Grab Indonesia, emphasized the importance of economic empowerment for their partners, especially the underprivileged, including women and people with disabilities. “Our collaboration with Vantage Foundation has enabled us to eliminate the greatest barriers, granting women access to capital and earnings opportunities that benefit themselves and their families. Together, we are cultivating an inclusive community where women can advance both at home and professionally.”
The Wiramudi Grab program, initiated in April 2024, aims to support women in entering and continuing work in passenger and delivery transportation on Grab's platform. Beyond income opportunities, the program creates comfortable conditions for women to progress gradually on the Grab platform. The initiative is available for women in 18 cities throughout Indonesia.
