Dynamic Infrastructure Collaborates with the University of Bath
In an innovative stride towards enhancing infrastructure management, Dynamic Infrastructure has joined forces with the University of Bath for a groundbreaking research project. This collaboration aims to investigate the effectiveness of various AI methodologies in addressing real-world infrastructure challenges. The study, supervised by Professor Thomas Kjeldsen from the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, is integral to Arline Osorio Moreno's Master of Science research.
Exploring AI Performance in Engineering Tasks
The primary objective of this research initiative is to scrutinize how different AI models perform in recognizing infrastructure conditions, specifically targeting the analysis of blockage and obstruction in drainage assets. A focal point of this investigation is the concept of cross-site generalization. Often, a model that shows promising results on familiar sites may not deliver the same level of success when faced with varied environments, reflective of differences in construction methods, equipment, and inspection practices.
This distinction is critical for agencies that must decide on the reliability of AI systems for practical application. Hence, the team is assessing several families of AI approaches, including vision-language models, vision foundation models, supervised deep learning, and classical machine-learning techniques. Each approach comes with its inherent trade-offs regarding accuracy, required labeled data, and adaptability across different sites.
Initial Findings
Preliminary results from this research have revealed significant disparities between the tested methods. Notably, while cutting-edge vision-language models boast broad capabilities, they currently lack the robustness essential for dependable real-world implementation in this specialized area. Conversely, more targeted approaches have demonstrated markedly superior performance.
Arik Voronov, AI R&D Lead at Dynamic Infrastructure, emphasized, "What stood out to us is how differently the models behave on the same engineering task. The largest models are not always the best choice; indeed, more specialized approaches can provide greater consistency. Additionally, understanding whether a model maintains its performance across different locations, inspection conditions, and asset types is crucial. This interplay between model selection and performance variability in real-world scenarios is where the compelling insights begin to emerge."
Bridging Academia and Industry
Professor Kjeldsen underlined the project’s significance in showcasing how partnerships between academic institutions and industry can drive engineering innovation forward. By merging the University of Bath's research capabilities with Dynamic Infrastructure's practical insights, the collaboration aims to examine advanced AI technologies against relevant infrastructure dilemmas. This partnership aspires to ensure that new AI instruments offer both scientific rigor and practical benefits for infrastructure managers and society at large.
Looking ahead, both parties are enthusiastic about furthering their collaboration, with the goal of developing their findings into a peer-reviewed academic publication, which will contribute to the wider discourse on the integration of AI in infrastructure management.
