Collaborative Anti-Violence Campaign by Railway Operators



In a significant move aimed at fostering safer travel experiences, numerous railway operators across Japan, including Japan's Private Railway Association, JR Hokkaido, JR East, JR Central, JR West, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu, as well as several city transport authorities, have united to launch the anti-violence initiative titled 'NO! Violence – A Punch to a Person Equals a Loss in Life!'. This campaign is set to kick off from July 10, 2026, and will see the poster displayed prominently within railway stations and inside trains.

Purpose of the Campaign


The initiative seeks to address incidents of violence against railway staff, including station employees and train crew, as well as conflicts among passengers. By calling for a unified approach to violence prevention, these railway operators are committed to reducing the number of violent incidents and providing a safer environment for all travelers. The ultimate goal is to ensure that passengers can use the railway services with greater security and ease.

Visual Messaging


The campaign posters have been designed with a striking graphic featuring a character in handcuffs, symbolizing the potential consequences of violent actions. This visual representation serves to remind individuals of the risks and regrets that can follow acts of violence. The message is clear: before escalation occurs, there is a critical moment to pause and choose to refrain from violence. The campaign aims to resonate with a wide audience and urges everyone utilizing the railways to engage in non-violent behavior.

Campaign Details


The posters will be distributed across 92 railway stations operated by various companies including the JR Group and major city transport authorities such as Sapporo, Tokyo, and Osaka. Approximately 5,000 posters will be displayed in station areas, and around 51,000 will be placed within train carriages, along with digital signage to amplify the message.

The campaign is being supported by the National Police Agency and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, highlighting the collaborative efforts to ensure civil safety.

Display Locations and Duration


Posters will be featured at multiple locations from July 10 to September 9, 2026, effectively covering a two-month period during which they will reach millions of daily commuters.

As the campaign rollout begins, authorities hope that raising awareness and encouraging positive behavior will lead to a significant reduction in violence, ultimately fostering a more pleasant and secure commuting experience for all passengers.

This collaborative project stands as a testament to the commitment of railway companies in Japan to prioritize safety and community well-being.
