Special Lecture on Food Loss Reduction at Eco Center Togoshi on June 14, 2026

Special Lecture on Food Loss Reduction

On June 14, 2026, the Eco Center Togoshi, located in Shinagawa, Tokyo, will host a special lecture coinciding with the government's designated "Environmental Month." This event celebrates the remarkable achievement of welcoming over one million visitors to the center.

The Environmental Month in June presents an essential opportunity for governments, businesses, and organizations to promote initiatives aimed at combating global warming, ensuring resource circulation, and preserving biodiversity, all of which contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. A critical issue prominently featured during this month is the problem of "food loss." In Japan alone, approximately 4.64 million tons of food, which could still be consumed, are discarded annually. This equates to about 37 kilograms of edible food lost per person each year. Not only does food loss increase waste management burdens and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but it also intertwines with the global food scarcity crisis, affecting both environmental and societal fronts.

The upcoming lecture will welcome Hiroyuki Baba, a well-known member of the comedic trio "Robert" and a designated ambassador for food loss reduction by the Consumer Affairs Agency. Baba, recognized for his culinary skills, will share practical tips on reducing food waste at home and innovative cooking ideas to avoid food waste. His engaging approach aims to promote a lifestyle that is both enjoyable and environmentally conscious, providing attendees with easily applicable strategies for food loss reduction.

During the event, participants can expect straightforward and enjoyable discussions on how to implement food waste reduction strategies in their daily lives, along with sustainable behavior changes that contribute to environmental awareness. As Eco Center Togoshi celebrates this significant milestone of one million visitors, gratitude for past support is expressed, combined with a commitment to deepening understanding and action towards environmental issues within the community. This lecture aims to inspire individuals to transition from merely knowing about environmental issues to actively participating in solutions.

What can we do to reduce food loss? Let’s explore this topic together while learning in a fun and interactive manner, starting today!
