SSFF & ASIA 2026: Where Innovation Meets Creativity
The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), one of the most prominent international short film festivals in Asia and an Academy Awards®-qualifying event, is set to kick off its Autumn Film Festival from November 5 to 22, 2026. This year, the festival takes a bold stride into the future of filmmaking with an innovative showcase dedicated to generative AI, marking a significant evolution in cinematic storytelling.
Celebrating Generative AI in Filmmaking
At the heart of this year’s event is the cutting-edge
“Generative AI x Short Film” program, which promises to be a highlight of the festival. The centerpiece of this showcase features a world premiere from the acclaimed J-Horror master
Ryuta Miyake, known for his works on the
Ju-On series and
The Complex. His new project, titled
PSY DIVER -Episode 1-, is not just a film but an exploration of the deep recesses of the human subconscious, brought to life by the AI creative platform
TOPVIEW. This unique combination of horror and technology sets a new precedent for immersive storytelling.
The program also includes two additional world premieres:
CENTER SPOT, directed by
Xu Xiang from Singapore, and
Proof of Live, directed by
NIKO Song Zhuohan from China, both exemplifying the diverse talent emerging from the Asian film scene.
Industry Insights from Cannes
SSFF & ASIA is not just about showcasing films; it also serves as a bridge connecting Japanese filmmakers to the global market. This year, the festival will feature an industry talk session, including video contributions from
Florian Fernandez, head of the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner. This session will spotlight six emerging Japanese directors—
Peter Clay,
Masashi Sogawa,
Takeshi Tanaka,
Yuichiro Nakata,
Hiromi Nakane, and
Yuria Matsushita—who will pitch their trailers and discuss strategies for accelerating their international careers.
A Fusion of Art and Technology
Further enhancing the festival’s offerings, SSFF & ASIA will present
TOKYO STORIES Season 2, an exciting initiative from
TYO, wherein 26 top creators, including music video director
Jun Tamukai and digital artist
SAEKO EHARA, will reimagine the city of Tokyo through a blend of live-action and AI-driven narratives. This not only showcases the innovative potential of modern filmmaking but also highlights the creative landscape of Japan as it integrates technology into art.
Additionally, the
CapCut AI Film Program will feature nine international short films, selected from over a hundred entries globally, showcasing how easily accessible AI tools are empowering new filmmakers to express their vision.
Physical and Virtual Engagement
The festival's physical screenings will take place in Tokyo at notable venues such as the
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and
kino cinéma Shinjuku from November 5 to 8. However, recognizing the importance of global accessibility, SSFF & ASIA will also offer online streams of AI showcases and curated selections through its
Online Grand Theater from November 9 to 22, ensuring that audiences worldwide can partake in this transformative event. Online passes are available at an affordable price of $5 for early birds and $8 for regular purchasers.
Conclusion
Since its inception in 1999 by actor
Tetsuya Bessho, SSFF & ASIA has dedicated itself to nurturing emerging filmmakers and promoting the vibrant culture of short films on a global scale. As we look forward to this year’s festival, the convergence of technology and storytelling promises to expand the horizons of what cinema can achieve.
