New Funding Initiative to Enhance ICT in Construction Industry for Disaster Response
Launch of Subsidy for the Construction Market Improvement Project
On April 17, 2023, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced the opening of applications for the Construction Market Improvement Project Subsidy, aimed at enhancing the role of the construction industry as a 'local protector' through improved utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This initiative focuses on enhancing rapid emergency response capabilities and increasing productivity on construction sites, especially in disaster recovery situations.
Objectives of the Initiative
As a vital force in post-disaster recovery, the construction industry is being encouraged to employ ICT tools to strengthen their disaster response and recovery capabilities. The government is providing financial support for training and activities that utilize ICT in emergency recovery operations. The subsidy will help cover a portion of the costs associated with the purchase of ICT devices and training programs that facilitate their use in disaster scenarios.
Eligible Beneficiaries
The subsidy will be available to a range of construction-related organizations and companies, allowing for a broad inclusion of entities engaged in the construction sector.
Scope of the Subsidy
The subsidy will cover up to half of the expenses associated with:
1. Acquisition of ICT devices, and
2. Costs related to disaster preparedness training that incorporates the use of these ICT devices.
