Defense Metals Corp., a key player in the rare earth elements sector, has started a critical pilot flotation test program at SGS Canada Inc.'s metallurgical facility in Lakefield, Ontario. This initiative focuses on its wholly-owned Wicheeda Rare Earth Project, located near Prince George, British Columbia. The program represents an essential phase in validating earlier results while advancing the project's metallurgical development.

The flotation test will use about 30 tonnes of drill core material sourced from the Wicheeda deposit. The samples selected represent two production phases outlined in the preliminary feasibility study (PFS) mine plan, covering years one through five and year six onwards. This pilot program aims to reaffirm the findings from a previous pilot test conducted in 2021 and generate flotation concentrate, which is critical for hydrometallurgical testing and subsequent engineering studies.

One of the main objectives is to produce a rare earth flotation concentrate with a target grade of around 50% total rare earth oxides (TREO). The results of this program will provide concentrated material necessary for further process verification and optimization in the downstream hydrometallurgical pilot plant. Additionally, the continuous running of the pilot plant will yield valuable process tailings for further testing and analysis, contributing to a better understanding of the project’s metallurgical performance under varied conditions.

Defense Metals has entrusted SGS to execute this program due to their esteemed reputation in metallurgical testing and pilot plant operations. The program's management will be overseen by J.R. Goode, P.Eng., a seasoned metallurgist with an impressive background spanning over 60 years in the industry and extensive experience with similar projects across various countries, including Canada, the USA, and Australia.

The pilot program will not only facilitate the creation of high-grade rare earth concentrates but will also furnish crucial engineering and process design insights necessary for the project's next development stages. In parallel, Defense Metals has enlisted Jenike Johanson to conduct further tests on bulk solids handling processes, which will help refine material handling criteria for the production plant.

Preparation for the test program included thorough pre-pilot characterization, consisting of head assays, grindability testing, and preliminary flotation studies. Operations for the pilot floatation are set to begin on May 12, 2026, with an expected duration of approximately five weeks.

He emphasized its significance in enhancing the Wicheeda Project's development by generating high-quality concentrate and contributing to de-risking and refining the overall process flow.
