University of Colorado Anschutz Honors Four Faculty Inducted into National Academy of Medicine
CU Anschutz Celebrates Faculty Induction into the National Academy of Medicine
The University of Colorado Anschutz has reached an impressive milestone by having four of its distinguished faculty members elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 2026. This recognition stands as a testament to the university's unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare and medical science. The NAM, one of the highest honors in the medical field, acknowledges exceptional professional accomplishments and contributions to science and health.
This year’s induction marks the largest group of faculty from CU Anschutz recognized together, emphasizing the institution’s research prowess and holistic approach to improving health outcomes. Chancellor Don Elliman remarked, "Election to the National Academy of Medicine is among the highest distinctions in medicine and science. Having four of our faculty recognized in the same year showcases the extraordinary contributions they have made and reflects the quality of talent within our community."
The four CU Anschutz inductees into the NAM include:
Lilia Cervantes, MD
Dr. Cervantes is revered for her groundbreaking research that highlights significant disparities in kidney care experienced by undocumented immigrants. Her work seamlessly integrates clinical practice with community engagement and policy advocacy, fostering equitable kidney health approaches and dismantling structural barriers preventing marginalized groups from receiving vital care.
Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH
Dr. Wynia is a leader in the field of bioethics and has significantly influenced discussions on healthcare equity, patient safety, and the ethical duties of health professionals. Through his substantial contributions to research and leadership roles within national organizations, he aims to cultivate a more ethical and accountable healthcare system in the United States.
Vik Bebarta, MD
As a distinguished emergency physician and physician-scientist, Dr. Bebarta's research focuses on enhancing treatment protocols for life-threatening medical emergencies, especially within military contexts. A colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the founding director of the CU Anschutz Combat Medicine Research Center, he actively translates scientific discoveries into effective treatment strategies that benefit both military personnel and civilians.
Lauren S. Hughes, MD, MPH, MsC, FAAFP
Dr. Hughes is a renowned health policy expert whose initiatives aim to reinforce healthcare systems and broaden access to quality care in under-resourced areas. Her unique blend of clinical insights, policy knowledge, and hands-on leadership facilitates real changes in healthcare delivery.
The rigorous selection process for the NAM scrutinizes candidates for their professional achievements and their broader impact on health and medicine, making induction a mark of prestige. "The body of work behind each election to the NAM represents a commitment to making a meaningful difference in healthcare," stated John H. Sampson, MD, PhD, MBA, the dean of the CU Anschutz School of Medicine.
The NAM serves as a collective of experts from various fields, united in their mission to address key healthcare challenges. The expertise of its members informs initiatives that shape research, health practices, and public policy, demonstrating the significant role the academy plays in improving health outcomes on a national scale.
For CU Anschutz, the elevation of these four faculty provides a chance not only to celebrate individual accomplishments but also to highlight the institution’s overall contributions in the realms of education, research, and public health. This honor amplifies the university’s standing as a leader in medical innovation and healthcare transformation.
