On June 3, 2006, a tragic incident occurred at the City Heights Takeshiba housing complex in Minato Ward, where an elevator malfunction led to the devastating loss of a 16-year-old high school student. This accident, resulting in such a profound tragedy, is not just a statistic but a painful memory for the community. In an effort to ensure that this event is never forgotten, Minato Ward has designated June 3 as Minato Safety Day. This designation aims to keep the memory of the incident alive while reinforcing the importance of safety in public facilities and providing a platform for community members to reflect on safety measures.

The ward is committed to fostering a culture of awareness around safety issues, especially regarding elevators and other critical infrastructure. Every year since 2018, the district has partnered with the Akatonbo no Kai, a group formed by the bereaved families and supporters of the accident, to hold the "6.3 Safe Society Initiatives." This event serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of safety in everyday life and the need for continued vigilance in ensuring such tragedies do not happen again.

  • - Takeshi Fukui: Head of the Building Accident Investigation and Disaster Prevention Section at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, who will share insights into the safety protocols surrounding elevators.
  • - Masako Ichikawa: A representative of the Akatonbo no Kai and a family member of the elevator accident victim, she will offer a personal account of the events and underline the importance of safety continuing forward.
