Get Ready, Houston! Community Preparedness Event
Overview
As hurricane season rapidly approaches in 2025, the urgency for communities to prepare has never been greater. In response to this ever-growing threat, Empower Community Development Corporation (CDC) and Whitestone Developments, in collaboration with EcoFlow, are set to host a free community event titled
"Get Ready, Houston!" on July 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at
Discovery Green, located at 1500 McKinney St, Houston, TX 77010.
This initiative aims to educate families on the importance of disaster preparedness, providing vital knowledge and resources to empower them against natural disasters.
Event Highlights
The event will feature several activities, including:
- - Demonstrations of backup generators
- - Distribution of emergency kits
- - Hurricane readiness tips
- - Interactive stations for kids
- - Opportunities to connect with local organizations focused on disaster response
- - An enrollment desk for the generator giveaway program
- - Free preparedness kits for attendees
- - Local food vendors to provide nourishment throughout the day.
Targeting families, especially seniors and ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households, the event emphasizes the importance of community resilience in the face of increasing storm activity.
Whitestone Developments has recognized the ongoing shift in Houston's climate, where storms and other extreme weather patterns pose significant risks to community safety. In prior years, devastating events like Hurricane Beryl and Winter Storm Uri have shown just how crucial family preparedness can be in mitigating the impacts of such disasters.
Community Response
Will Merrick, CEO of Whitestone Developments and Empower CDC, emphasized the importance of community readiness during a recent interview. He stated, _"There are a lot of people in the Houston area that need help, and I firmly believe that when you can help you should."_ This sentiment echoes the mission behind the event–to foster a stronger, educated, and more affluent community that is capable of weathering any storm.
This year's hurricane season stands as a critical time for Houston, as the combined impact of climate change and rapid urbanization make emergency preparedness essential. As such, Whitestone and Empower CDC are committed to providing resources and educational opportunities that can empower families in times of need.
"Our goal is to make sure that every family feels equipped to handle emergencies effectively," added Merrick.
