Expanding Cooperation Between Myanmar and China

In a significant move to reinforce bilateral relations, Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing recently concluded his inaugural state visit to China, which took place from June 15 to 19, 2026. This visit signifies a pivotal moment for both nations as they seek to deepen their pragmatic collaboration across multiple sectors. The visit was marked by an itinerary that included a tour of the China Railway Construction Corporation Limited in Beijing and a ride on the Fuxing high-speed train from the capital to Shanghai. Through these experiences, President Min Aung Hlaing was able to witness China's remarkable achievements in infrastructure and development firsthand, expressing Myanmar's eagerness to enhance infrastructure cooperation with China.

Following productive discussions, the two countries signed a comprehensive array of cooperation agreements that underscore their long-standing friendship, known as "pauk-phaw." During a bilateral meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping indicated China's commitment to sharing its developmental insights with Myanmar, emphasizing the aspiration to cultivate a community centered on political friendship, mutual trust, and win-win scenarios for both nations. This partnership is further exemplified by China's status as Myanmar’s largest trading ally, with a staggering 2025 bilateral trade figure of $19.4 billion, reflecting a 19.1% increase year-over-year.

The economic partnership also reveals a distinct trade dynamic: China predominantly exports electromechanical equipment and vehicles to Myanmar while importing high-quality agricultural goods and minerals from the nation. This exchange creates a robust industrial trade cycle that benefits both parties. Furthermore, the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, a cornerstone of the Belt and Road Initiative, is advancing rapidly, showcasing key projects like the New Yangon City, the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, and the China-Myanmar Railway. These initiatives are pivotal in upgrading Myanmar’s industrial capabilities and improving local living standards, simultaneously fostering cross-border economic integration.

President Xi reiterated the importance of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor during discussions. He encouraged both nations to methodically advance major projects while ensuring safety and security and to support Myanmar in its economic development and enhancement of its citizens' lives. In this context, Xi further affirmed China’s readiness to launch more community-based assistance programs, emphasizing a shared narrative of mutual prosperity.

A joint statement issued by both nations laid out their commitment to hastening the formation of a shared future that benefits their respective populations. This depth of cooperation extended beyond economic discussions and included agreements in transport, science, technology, human resources development, public health, and media relations. The emphasis on bilateral and multilateral law enforcement also stood out, particularly in combating cross-border criminal activities. Both governments underscored their commitment to forming an international coalition to address telecom cyber fraud, demonstrating a collaborative effort to uphold peace and security in border areas.

In recent months, combined law enforcement efforts have effectively dismantled telecom fraud operations along the northern borders, contributing to broader safety and stability for citizens of both nations. During the conversations, Xi urged both countries to persist in their fight against criminal enterprises, including online gambling, telecom fraud, and drug trafficking, prioritizing the security of their peoples.

President Min Aung Hlaing echoed this sentiment, expressing Myanmar's intent to closely collaborate with China in eradicating online gambling and telecom fraud while ensuring security on their mutual borders. Qu Jianwen, a notable figure in Southeast Asian Studies from Yunnan Province, remarked that President Min's visit to China vividly illustrates the momentum propelling bilateral cooperation forward.
