HD Hyundai Achieves a Milestone in Shipbuilding

HD Hyundai has reached a remarkable milestone in the shipbuilding industry by securing an order valued at approximately 1.46 billion USD for eight ultra-large container ships. This achievement marks the largest order for container ships in the last 18 years since the shipbuilding boom in 2007. The contract was officially announced by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) on November 23, 2025, highlighting the company's ongoing advancement in maritime technology and commitment to sustainability.

The agreement was signed with HMM, a major player in the shipping industry, to construct eight 13,400-TEU dual-fuel container ships. Each vessel will be about 337 meters long, 51 meters wide, and 27.9 meters high, and will feature advanced LNG dual-fuel engines alongside significantly enlarged fuel tanks that are approximately 50% larger. Out of these eight vessels, two will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) while the remaining six will be constructed by HD Hyundai Samho. Deliveries are expected to take place consecutively, culminating in the first half of 2029.

This contract is particularly significant as HD Hyundai has recorded a total of 720,000 TEU worth of orders this year, marking its largest volume since 2007, during a time when the global demand for cargo reached its peak.
