LIFULL ArchiTech's Collaboration with Tomas Engineering in Thailand
LIFULL ArchiTech, a subsidiary of Japan's LIFULL, has embarked on a strategic partnership with Tomas Engineering in Thailand, set to officially launch on April 1, 2026. The initiative aims to deploy high-quality industrial tents designed for the growing demand for instant housing solutions, particularly in the tourism sector and areas affected by natural disasters.
Addressing Thailand's Challenges
Thailand has witnessed rapid growth in its outdoor tourism market, especially post-COVID-19, with glamping emerging as a sought-after accommodation type. However, tourism operators face substantial hurdles, including steep construction costs and significant logistical challenges in deploying high-quality lodging in natural and scenic environments. This situation has hindered the introduction of adequate lodging facilities. Additionally, ongoing natural disasters have left many individuals and families homeless and in urgent need of improved living conditions, emphasizing the critical need for disaster support and rehabilitation efforts.
The Benefits of Instant Houses
The instant house concept utilizes inflatable tent sheets coupled with interior thermal insulation. This simplistic construction method allows for assembly in just a few hours, making it an ideal solution for locations where extensive construction is impractical. The houses are not only cost-effective in the initial setup but also provide excellent insulation, soundproofing, and durability, including earthquake and wind resistance. They can serve various purposes, ranging from accommodation and workspaces to homes for displaced individuals, medical shelters in disaster areas, and community spaces in refugee camps. Given their design, these structures maintain comfortable temperatures year-round, making them energy-efficient and cost-effective options for operators.
Collaborating with Tomas Engineering
Tomas Engineering is recognized in Thailand for its advanced tent manufacturing capabilities, ensuring both quality and safety in all its products. This partnership will leverage LIFULL ArchiTech's expertise while tapping into Tomas Engineering's strong manufacturing capabilities and resource procurement. Together, they will establish a thorough system for production, sales, and installation in Thailand. Future plans include selling luxury glamping houses to tourism operators and collaborating with the Thai government and local authorities to provide residential spaces for disaster recovery and humanitarian support.
Insights from Executives
Commenting on this collaboration, Tsukasa Yamanaka, COO of LIFULL ArchiTech and a collaborative researcher at Nagoya Institute of Technology, stated, "This partnership is a significant step towards establishing a local production and supply system for instant houses in Thailand. With growing demand in tourism as well as pressing challenges from natural disasters, the potential for instant houses to address these needs is substantial. We look forward to contributing not only to the tourism sector but also to disaster relief and improvements in local living conditions."
Kozo Nozaki, representative of Tomas Engineering, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are honored to formalize this partnership with LIFULL and the Nagoya Institute of Technology to manufacture and market the innovative Instant House in Thailand. This product, equipped with excellent thermal insulation and rapid construction capabilities, holds enormous potential in the dynamically growing Thai market, serving not only for disaster response but also as a unique resort facility. Together, we will create new value leveraging our local networks and manufacturing expertise."
About Instant House
The Instant House concept was developed in collaboration with the Nagoya Institute of Technology following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. This innovative structure is classified as a non-building due to its temporary nature, allowing it to be installed in diverse locations without the constraints typically associated with permanent constructions. The simplicity of installation, along with its thermal insulation and durability, makes it adaptable for use in various situations, from workspaces to medical shelters and community relaxation areas.
