Revolutionizing the Driving Experience: LG Display's New Ultra-Large Automotive Displays

LG Display's Game-Changer in Automotive Displays

LG Display, renowned for its pioneering display technologies, has entered a new milestone by commencing the mass production of the world's first 40-inch Pillar to Pillar (P2P) automotive display. This ultra-large display is set to transform the driving experience, aligning with the burgeoning era of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs).

The P2P display is specially designed to cover the entire area in front of the driver and passenger seats, providing a seamless interface for accessing critical driving information and entertainment options. The push towards SDVs necessitates enhanced software control for increased user convenience, which can be achieved through such expansive display technologies.

Enhanced Infotainment Experience

The new 40-inch P2P display offers a customizable infotainment experience, allowing simultaneous viewing of various applications, including navigation, climate control, movies, music, and games, without navigating away from the current screen. In traditional vehicle displays, accessing multiple functions often caused disruptions like navigation instructions vanishing or shrinking. However, the innovative P2P display mitigates these issues by ensuring uninterrupted experiences across different entertainment and control functions.

To address the key safety concerns associated with larger displays, LG Display has integrated its Switchable Privacy Mode (SPM) technology. This feature allows the front passenger to engage with media while restricting visibility for the driver, thus keeping their attention on the road. Recognized as a leading safety enhancement, SPM maintains ultra-high-definition resolution while controlling viewing angles effectively.

Energy Efficiency and Design Innovations

In a bid to enhance energy efficiency, LG Display has also incorporated local dimming technology into the P2P display. This advancement not only minimizes heat generation but also reduces power consumption, aligning perfectly with next-gen mobility solutions such as electric vehicles.

Furthermore, the design potential for future automotive ventures is significantly broadened. The P2P display eliminates the need for excess physical buttons, enabling streamlined control of various functionalities straight from the display interface.

Collaboration with Sony Honda Mobility

The impressive 40-inch P2P display is set to make its debut in the Afeela, the inaugural sedan from the Japanese collaboration of Sony Honda Mobility. This next-generation electric vehicle aims to merge Sony's cutting-edge IT and entertainment capabilities with Honda’s manufacturing excellence. The expectation is that this ultra-large display will greatly enhance AI-driven driver assistance systems and diverse entertainment features.

Keuk-sang Kwon, Head of Auto Business Group at LG Display, highlighted the company's commitment to delivering innovative solutions tailored for the SDV landscape. He emphasized that LG Display will continue leveraging its advanced proprietary technologies to create distinct value for its customers.
