Space Seed Holdings Explores Sustainable Food Innovations at SFC2026
Space Seed Holdings, based in Minato, Tokyo, recently participated in the Sustainable Food Camp 2026 (SFC2026) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Represented by Dr. Kengo Suzuki, the company engaged in fruitful discussions with industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and food tech startups from nine countries.
The SFC2026, hosted by Sustainable Food Asia (SFA) and co-organized by Leave a Nest Malaysia, gathered approximately 150 participants from 120 companies across 20 countries. The event aimed to translate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) priorities into actionable business collaborations. This year, the event focused on three critical topics: prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through functional foods, the circularity of food systems, and nutritional equity for vulnerable communities.
SAKESOME™: Promoting Functional Nanoparticles in ASEAN Health Markets
A highlight of Space Seed's initiatives is SAKESOME™, a fermented-based functional nanoparticle developed by its subsidiary, Regenesome Inc. The company presented its findings at SFC2026, showcasing how its unique fermentation technology and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) could effectively penetrate the fast-growing health food and beverage market in ASEAN countries. SAKESOME™ represents an innovative bio-functional material that bridges traditional Japanese fermentation culture with advanced nanoparticle science.
During the discussions, the potential for introducing SAKESOME™-based functional products in Southeast Asia was a key focus, identifying prospective partners in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Additionally, the premium food product “GO GRANDCLASS Uonuma Koshihikari Edition” was exhibited, featuring functional nanoparticle SAKESOME™, as part of Regenesome’s wellness brand “SaiseiLabo,” along with a supplement containing ergothioneine.
Dr. Kengo Wellness Brand: Tackling ASEAN's Diabetes and NCD Challenges
Dr. Suzuki also shared the vision for the “Dr. Kengo” wellness brand developed by AT Life, the Malaysian subsidiary. The brand targets the increasing burden of NCDs, particularly diabetes, in the ASEAN region. According to WHO, NCDs account for approximately 55% of global deaths, with Southeast Asia experiencing an upsurge in diabetes prevalence due to dietary shifts toward high-carbohydrate, high-fat, and ultra-processed foods and limited access to healthy choices.
The Dr. Kengo brand aims to establish a product line of functional foods and supplements based on scientific evidence, focusing on primary prevention to reduce disease risk. Leveraging Dr. Suzuki’s expertise and the group's capabilities in fermentation and nanoparticle research, the brand seeks to deliver affordable, evidence-based health solutions tailored to ASEAN's diverse food cultures and regulatory environments.
Discussions during SFC2026 highlighted how the Dr. Kengo brand could align with Malaysia's National Nutrition Agenda (Child & Family Nutrition 2023–2030) and the broader NCD prevention strategy in ASEAN, particularly focusing on halal product development and distribution.
Green Fermentation: Proposing Sustainable Technological Solutions in Indonesia
The SFC2026 event also featured proposals for “Green Fermentation,” a method incorporating microalgae into traditional fermentation processes to create higher value products efficiently. This approach looks towards Indonesia, leveraging its abundant biomass resources, expansive bio-economy policy support, and the world’s largest Muslim population market.
Dr. Suzuki advocates for green fermentation as a synthesis of renewable energy, local biomass materials, and traditional Indonesian fermentation wisdom (such as tempeh and tapai culture) along with cutting-edge bioprocess engineering. The ultimate aim is to produce a range of fermented functional foods, ingredients, and bio-materials for the ASEAN and global halal markets, localized for implementation across regions.
At SFC2026, discussions with Indonesian food tech startups, Malaysian manufacturing partners, and ASEAN ecosystem builders revolved around concrete strategies for joint ventures, investments, and regulatory compliance related to these initiatives.
Building a Fermentation and Longevity Platform Across ASEAN
Through its participation in SFC2026, Space Seed Holdings reaffirmed that its fermentation and longevity technology development can significantly contribute to solving health and sustainability challenges within ASEAN. The company plans to continue collaborating with Sustainable Food Asia and its partner network, aiming to establish concrete partnerships, pilot projects, and market entry plans by the end of 2026.
