Discover the Enchanting World of YOKAI at Kagoshima's Immersive Art Exhibition

Introduction to KAGOSHIMA's YOKAI Exhibition

From July 3 to August 31, 2026, Kagoshima welcomes an extraordinary event, the "YOKAI Exhibition: Imagination of Japan". This immersive experience, produced by Hitohata Inc., aims to explore the rich culture surrounding Japanese monsters, known as yokai, inviting visitors of all ages to learn, enjoy, and engage with this unique art form.

Having already attracted over 250,000 visitors in cities like Nagoya and Tokyo, this exhibition stands out as a pioneering digital art museum that combines classic yokai artworks with the latest in visual technology.

The Concept Behind the Exhibition

The exhibition combines traditional Japanese yokai paintings from the Edo and Meiji periods—such as the "Hyakki Yako" and "Yokai Biographies"—with modern immersive technologies like 3DCG animation and projection mapping. These elements allow ancient artwork to come to life, creating an unforgettable experience.

Through cutting-edge holographic screens and dynamic projections, attendees can witness the whimsical forms of yokai as they dance and move around them. The exhibition draws support from renowned institutions like the Nishio City Iwase Library and the Yokai Museum in Shodoshima, alongside providing educational insights into the history and cultural significance of these creatures.

Educational and Cultural Experience

While the exhibition focuses heavily on visual stimulation, it also serves an educational purpose. Visitors can explore the meanings behind various yokai, their connection to Japanese folklore, and how they influence modern pop culture. Special exhibits will link historic illustrations with contemporary interpretations, showing how yokai have inspired manga, anime, and other aspects of Japanese entertainment today.

The exhibition will be held at the Kagoshima Prefectural Historical and Art Center, Room 1 of the Special Exhibition Hall. Operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last entry at 5:30 PM.
