On May 26, 2026, OKAYAMA University hosted its Open Innovation MatchUp vol.5 at the Tsushima Campus. This event, organized by the Okayama Digital Innovation Creation Platform (OI-Start), brought together over 200 participants from academia, industry, research, and local government, all united by a common theme: leveraging computational infrastructures in the age of AI.
The event kicked off with an introduction by Yasunobu Nogami, the chairman of OI-Start, who highlighted the platform's ongoing initiatives. Following his opening remarks, notable guest speakers took the stage. Takaki Haribara from Amazon Web Services Japan delivered a talk titled "DX in Research and Development During the Cloud and AI Era," emphasizing the transformative potential of cloud computing and AI in advancing research efforts. Additionally, Yuichiro Minato, CEO of Blueqat Corporation, provided insights into the latest trends in quantum computing, while Hidetaka Takano, head of the Japan Quantum Computing Association, discussed initiatives aimed at fostering societal adoption of these technologies.
Furthermore, Professor Takao Shimayoshi from the university's interdisciplinary education and research domain introduced the advanced HPC environments developed through projects like J-PEAKS, demonstrating how these resources are poised to facilitate collaborative research efforts between academia and industry.
The day featured an engaging panel discussion, moderated by Kiichi Takahashi, the vice chairman of OI-Start and dean of the Faculty of Engineering. The discussion, centered on the theme "Accelerating Research and Development with Cloud, Quantum, and HPC," sparked vibrant dialogues among experts across various fields, generating excitement around potential new technology collaborations.
In the latter part of the event, a poster session allowed participants to engage directly with exhibitors through short pitches, creating an energetic atmosphere filled with exchanges aimed at solving technological challenges and exploring new collaborative opportunities. The networking event that followed the main program at the Peach Union facility of the university also facilitated meaningful interactions across the sectors of academia, industry, and government.
The advancements in computation resources such as AI, quantum computing, and HPC are accelerating research and societal implementation at unprecedented speeds. OI-Start remains committed to providing spaces for shared innovation and collaboration in the future. Organizations and individuals interested in participating in OI-Start's initiatives related to industry-academia-government cooperation are encouraged to consider joining the platform.
