Celebrating a Year of Transformation
On June 5, 2026, the American Primary Aluminum Association (APAA) proudly commemorated the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s 50% Section 232 aluminum tariff. This groundbreaking policy has brought about remarkable changes in the aluminum manufacturing sector in the United States. By taking a firm stand against unfair foreign trade practices, the tariff aims to bolster domestic production and protect American workers.
In one year, the effects of the tariff have been revolutionary. The aluminum industry has not only witnessed a surge in investments but has also catalyzed the creation of thousands of jobs across the country. Major companies are stepping up to contribute significantly to the U.S. economy. For instance, Emirates Global Aluminum and Century Aluminum are set to construct the first new smelter in the U.S. in nearly half a century, representing an investment exceeding $4 billion. This initiative will undoubtedly double the country’s aluminum production capacity and generate over 5,000 job opportunities in Oklahoma.
Additionally, Century Aluminum's commitment to reopening its Mt. Holly smelter is noteworthy. By returning to full production capacity, this facility has already created over 100 new jobs in South Carolina, positively impacting local communities and contributing to a more robust U.S. aluminum output, which now enjoys a remarkable increase of over 10%.
Equally impressive is Novelis’s decision to channel $5 billion into a new aluminum rolling mill projected to generate up to 1,000 jobs in Alabama. Moreover, Aluminum Dynamics marked another milestone by launching the commercial production of a state-of-the-art recycled aluminum flat rolled mill in Mississippi. This $2.5 billion investment has already created over 700 jobs, showcasing the potential of recycled materials in the manufacturing sector.
Mark Duffy, president of APAA, expressed his pride in the tangible results stemming from Trump's decisive actions. He stated, “One year ago today, President Trump took decisive action to stand up for American workers by launching a new Golden Age for domestic aluminum manufacturing. The results speak for themselves: the aluminum industry is delivering billions of dollars in U.S. investment and creating thousands of American aluminum jobs, and it's all due to President Trump's 50% Section 232 tariff, with no exemptions or exclusions.”
The advancements achieved over the past year highlight a concerted effort to fortify U.S. manufacturing while simultaneously enhancing national security. With these significant strides, the aluminum industry stands as a testament to the potential benefits derived from protective trade measures.
As the APAA continues its mission to advocate for the interests of the primary aluminum sector and its valued workers, it remains committed to fostering a competitive environment that prioritizes growth and innovation within the industry. The Aluminum Now campaign, launched by the APAA, emphasizes the importance of supporting domestic production and harnessing the vast opportunities available in the U.S. manufacturing landscape.
