Enhancing Healthy Lifestyles through Onigiri Day
On June 18, recognized as Onigiri Day, Pal System Cooperative Union, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, initiated an event dedicated to promoting better eating habits among its employees. This event forms part of their health management strategy aimed at enhancing the well-being of their staff through nutritious and delicious food.
The day's activities kicked off with a nutritionist explaining the health benefits of rice balls (onigiri), followed by the Pal System’s rice specialist discussing the current state of rice production and recommending premium rice brands suitable for making rice balls. Participants enjoyed hands-on experience making rice balls at three different Pal System facilities, connected online.
The event not only focused on preparing rice balls but also included a collaborative approach to support local children’s cafeterias. For each action or initiative taken by participants, the organization committed to donating direct-sourcing rice, thereby driving both rice consumption and support for those in need, successfully achieving their target of 167 actions.
Event Highlights
The event was lively, with employees learning about various rice types such as 'Eco Niigata Koshihikari', 'Eco Miyagi Hitomebore', and 'Eco Sakata Haenuki', followed by tasting sessions. With 67 logged online views and 100 tasting participants, there were a total of 167 actions counted, demonstrating significant engagement.
Participants also enjoyed a fun game designed by rice grain staff, where they participated in making rice balls. This hands-on activity not only fostered engagement but also highlighted the creative ways to enjoy this staple food while promoting health.
Continuing the Journey to Healthier Eating
As a follow-up to the event, Pal System is launching a photo campaign where employees are encouraged to incorporate rice balls into their daily diets. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to promote healthy eating, invites staff to share pictures of homemade rice balls and aims to raise awareness of nutrition interactively. The campaign will run from June 18, 2026, to July 2, 2026, and employees can participate by submitting photos of rice balls created by themselves or their families through a dedicated submission form.
Incentives include prizes for the most prolific contributors, as well as rewards for all participants who submit photos more than twice during the campaign, urging more staff to engage with healthier eating habits.
A Testament to Commitment
Koko Nakayama and Ayumi Miyano from the HR department emphasized the event and campaign's importance in ultimately improving employees' diets: “The synergy between the Onigiri Good action and this event provides a stepping stone for employees to enhance their eating habits.”
Through such engaging initiatives, Pal System aims to not only promote healthy eating but also support community food assistance programs and sustainability by encouraging the consumption of locally produced rice. The ‘Onigiri Good’ action is just one of many endeavors aimed at improving food self-sufficiency in Japan, fostering a culture of thoughtful consumption and community building. Come join us on this journey, sharing health and sustainability, one rice ball at a time!
