AM Batteries Teams Up for $50 Million DOE Project
AM Batteries, renowned for its innovative dry battery-electrode (DBE) manufacturing technology, has recently announced its participation as a key subrecipient in a significant $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This funding comes under the Manufacturing Deployment Office (MDO) as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The initiative, primarily led by Coreshell Technologies, is set to enhance the domestic battery manufacturing landscape by establishing approximately 2 gigawatt-hours of electrode manufacturing capacity alongside 1.5 gigawatt-hours of cell assembly capacity in the United States. This project not only aims to revolutionize battery production but also promises to generate over 100 jobs in various sectors, including production, technical, and administrative positions.
Central to AM Batteries' contribution is its cutting-edge dry-coating process for cathode manufacturing. This technique eliminates the need for traditional, energy-intensive solvent-based wet coating methods, and reduces the dependency on toxic solvents. By integrating AM Batteries' proprietary Powder to Electrode™ platform with advanced material technologies, the partnership seeks to cut down both capital and operational costs significantly, paving the way for high-performance and economically viable batteries tailor-made for electric vehicles and defense applications.
CTO Hieu Duong emphasized the transformative potential of this project, stating, "We aim to demonstrate that a completely domestically produced, high-performance battery cell can compete in cost against mass-produced cells from Asia." Duong further elaborated that in order to prevail in the growing battery market, the U.S. must focus on creating substantial manufacturing and material advantages rather than merely imitating existing technologies.
The conventional lithium-ion battery manufacturing process places a heavy reliance on wet-slurry casting, which not only requires extensive drying ovens but also generates significant waste through the use of toxic solvents. AM Batteries’ innovative dry-electrode process revolutionizes this approach by removing these energy-draining and polluting steps entirely. This advancement can potentially lower electrode manufacturing capital expenditure by as much as 40% and operational costs by over 50%, while also significantly reducing the carbon emissions associated with battery production.
