International Oncology Experts Gather in Kenya to Address Regional Cancer Needs

Enhancing Cancer Care in Sub-Saharan Africa

Recently, a significant gathering of oncology experts took place in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at addressing the pressing cancer care needs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®), a collaboration of leading cancer centers in the United States, joined forces with the African Cancer Coalition (ACC) during the American Cancer Society (ACS) Global Academy regional workshop, held from June 9 to 11, 2025. This event focused on updating cancer treatment guidelines specifically tailored to the needs of the region.

The regional workshop marked a critical initiative to improve cancer treatment and support for patients across Sub-Saharan Africa. Over three days, specialists from around the world brought valuable insights and knowledge to enrich clinical best practices. The workshop included two dedicated days for updating NCCN’s clinical practice guidelines in oncology, known as the *NCCN Guidelines®. These guidelines are foundational documents that provide evidence-based recommendations for the prevention, screening, treatment, and supportive care of cancer patients.

During the meeting, topics of expertise ranged widely, covering the latest research findings relevant to various cancers. The NCCN Guidelines® are recognized globally and are frequently updated to reflect the most current evidence and expert consensus. Approximately half of the two million registered users of these guidelines operate beyond U.S. borders, spanning across 190 countries.

The Need for Contextualized Guidelines

Anu Agrawal, MD, Vice President of Global Cancer Support at the American Cancer Society, emphasized the importance of creating a productive environment for knowledge exchange among providers. “These regional meetings of the ACS Global Academy are intended to provide a dedicated space for providers to learn from each other, discuss, and reach consensus on regional needs,” Dr. Agrawal noted. The collaboration with the ACC and NCCN on developing and updating the NCCN Harmonized Guidelines™ creates a vital framework for better understanding localized needs and priorities.

As part of this event, the attendees reviewed existing NCCN Harmonized Guidelines™ for a variety of cancer types, including anal carcinoma, biliary tract cancers, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, and more. Each of these guidelines is informed by the latest research, ensuring that healthcare providers in the region have access to the most up-to-date and relevant information.

A Growing Challenge

Crystal S. Denlinger, MD, the Executive Director of NCCN, spoke to the continual challenges faced in this region. “For many years, we have been working alongside experts from the ACC in Sub-Saharan Africa to share guidelines that are both ambitious and practical.” Dr. Denlinger highlights a troubling trend: despite improvements in cancer care resources and services, there has been a noticeable increase in cancer rates within the population.

The urgency of the collaboration is underscored by the growing cancer burden in this part of the world, making the updating of treatment recommendations not just beneficial but essential. Dr. Denlinger attended the meeting alongside experts in various fields, contributing towards refining treatment algorithms based on the latest evidence and local circumstances.

Building a Global Network

The workshop aimed not only to update clinical guidelines but also to foster communication and collaboration among oncology professionals globally. Participants included high-profile oncologists from prestigious institutions and organizations, each contributing their expertise and insights. This holistic approach is necessary for building a robust cancer care infrastructure in regions where resources may be limited.

As the NCCN approaches its 30th anniversary as a nonprofit alliance dedicated to cancer care, research, and education, it remains committed to promoting quality, effectiveness, equity, and accessibility in cancer prevention and treatment worldwide. With the updating of clinical practice guidelines, the NCCN continues to play a pivotal role in educating and empowering patients and caregivers through transparent, evidence-based recommendations.
