SJJIF WORLD JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIP 2026 Announcement
The world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about to witness a gathering of unmatched magnitude as the SJJIF (Sports Jiu-Jitsu International Federation) announces the SJJIF WORLD JIU-JITSU CHAMPIONSHIP 2026, scheduled to be held from September 3 to September 6, 2026 at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. This highly anticipated event aims to welcome a record-breaking count of 8,000 participants from across the globe.
Event Highlights
During a press conference held on September 22, 2025 in Tokyo, prominent figures from the world of jiu-jitsu, including SJJIF president Joao Silva, ASJJF (Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation) representative Edson Kagohara, and SJJJF (Sports Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Japan) representative Ryozo Murata unveiled the grand plans for the championship. Joining them were notable athletes, including Gabrieli Peçanha, who dazzled audiences by winning four gold medals at the previous year's championship.
Joao Silva commented on the importance of collaboration, stating, “A championship grows thanks to the combined strength of organization and athlete prowess. The management in Japan over the last two years has been outstanding, creating an incredible atmosphere. We aim to further expand in 2026 and continue our growth together with the global jiu-jitsu community.”
Edson Kagohara shared the excitement surrounding the growth of the event. “In 2024, we had about 4,500 participants, which grew to over 5,500 in 2025. For 2026, we are setting our sights on 8,000 participants, aiming to create an even larger event.”
Cultural Significance
Ryozo Murata emphasized the cultural aspects that make jiu-jitsu competitions special. He remarked, “The world championship serves as a unique platform for jiu-jitsu practitioners to share not just their technical skills, but also culture and friendship. When SJJIF, ASJJF, and SJJJF collaborate, jiu-jitsu creates a powerful bond linking Japan to the rest of the world.”
Murata also indicated plans for enhanced visual and sound experiences for the 2026 championship. Events in previous years included large monitors and fiery performances, while 2026 will aim for an indoor experience that has never been seen before in jiu-jitsu history, complete with live music and engaging performances. “We want to maximize the emotional connection between the athletes and the audience,” he added.
Previous Championship Success
Reflecting on the success of the most recent 2025 championship held at the Chiba Port Arena from September 18 to 21, which saw participation from 5,500 athletes from 70 nations and an audience of 30,000, it is clear that excitement is building within the community. Gabrieli Peçanha, who won titles across multiple divisions, expressed his delight at participating in such a prestigious event. “I’m thrilled to be part of this championship. I want to inspire the next generation through my experiences. I’ll definitely return next year with more friends!” said the black belt champion from Brazil.
Upcoming Local Events
Before the grand championship, the Japanese federation will host the All Japan Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the Jiu-Jitsu Koshien on October 12-13, 2025, at Yoyogi National Stadium, where more than 1,000 competitors are expected to showcase their skills.
