QNX Software Development Platform Powers Eclipse S-CORE Project for Automotive Safety and Innovation
QNX Software Development Platform Powers Eclipse S-CORE Project
BlackBerry Limited's QNX, headquartered in Ontario, Canada, announced on June 18, 2025, that its QNX® Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0 is the foundational operating system for the Eclipse Foundation's open-source project, Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE). This partnership aims to revolutionize the development of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) within the automotive industry. By adopting QNX SDP 8.0, the Eclipse Foundation intends to significantly reduce development periods and project costs, from research to production and vehicle implementation.
The S-CORE project unites an array of major players in the automotive sector, including BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, ETAS, Qorix, and Accenture, as part of Eclipse's SDV working group. The focus will be on developing an open-source core stack specifically for high-performance embedded Electronic Control Units (ECUs) used in SDVs.
The initial release, S-CORE v0.5, is expected to incorporate core functionalities such as application orchestration, inter-process communication (IPC), logging, and data persistence. Through this release, QNX SDP 8.0 will serve as the reference OS, enabling robust evaluation and implementation of these features. This initiative is a key milestone in developing a common, open, and safety-critical software platform for the automotive industry.
The success of the S-CORE project is further driven by the QNX Everywhere initiative, which aims to broaden access to QNX's high-performance foundational software for non-profit use. This initiative targets students, educational institutions, research organizations, and OEMs aiming for early prototyping purposes. Through QNX Everywhere, QNX SDP 8.0 will be accessible at no cost for non-profit use, accompanied by free resources to enhance embedded system learning, experimentation, and innovation.
John Wall, QNX's COO and head of product engineering services, remarked that “being selected as the foundational OS for the Eclipse S-CORE project demonstrates QNX's trusted reputation in the automotive industry. This adoption enables advanced prototyping for non-commercial purposes to be simpler and faster.” He added that collaborating with leading OEMs and Tier 1 companies on the Eclipse S-CORE opens up greater access to the QNX SDP 8.0 for developers, paving the way for the future of automotive technology.
The amalgamation of a highly reliable OS like QNX with the flexibility and transparency of open-source development will allow contributors and adopters of S-CORE to drive faster and more efficient innovation throughout the proof-of-concept to production process.
QNX is recognized as a foundational software provider by leading OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers around the globe, including Toyota, Honda, BMW, Bosch, Ford, Geely, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Volvo. The foundational software developed by QNX supports engineering designs aimed towards the future, ranging from digital cockpits and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to high-performance computing (HPC) systems. This enables automakers to bring innovations to market more quickly and cost-effectively.
